Double Barrel Shotgun
Just picked up a Steven's model 235 double barrel in 12 gauge. I've been wanting a nice usable double for a while. Anyone else have one of these or have any experience with them? I'll post pics when I can.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
The Riverside Arms double I have is the 311's predecessor, and I know they made one that was the 235's. Hammered double in 12 guage.
Numrich has parts (a few), and it was also very much like Savage, Springfield, Fox models of the same number and some parts may interchange with the Riverside Arms model 215.
is your Friend! Just type in "Stevens 235" and you will fnid all to satisfy your curiosity!

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
Please note: While the Stevens Model 235 hammerguns were made as late as 1929-30, they were made for a loooong time before that - and in 1926 ALL the ammo companies upgraded shotshell loads with new/different powders, aka: higher pressure loads than prior to 1926.
Since there's NO practical way to determine when YOUR Model 235 was made (There are no SN records available), IMO it wouldn't be prudent to shoot any modern shotgun ammo through it - even so-called "low brass", "field" or "target" loads.
Today, however, there's special, low-powered ammo available for these older guns, from the likes of RST, PolyWad, Kent Cartridge, GameBore & a few others - which enables folks with them to enjoy them.
FWIW, I have a ca.1911 Ithaca Flues 28ga model I shoot, using RST shells.

Uncle Joe will love you for that, Rusty.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
No practical info but my Dad had one when I was a kid....great memories of that old double, which seemed to me at the time to be the hammer of Thor. On the Arizona Desert he only used Dove and Quail loads with no problems, but Pete's advice seems very sound. Maybe a Stevens nut can tell you more about when it was made, based on small changes made to the design? Not that you'd want to shoot heavies in it but would be nice to find out more.
Edit: disregard.....did not realize this was the hammer gun. I think they are mong he prettiest of the hammer doubles and ave been on the lookout. Good info to know on these.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
I am in Az., the shotgun is in N.M.
So do not hold my feet to the fire.
I think I have a Stevens Model 325, and it is definetly a hammerless model.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
Stevens hammerless model was known at the 311. Also known as the 315. The 235 model was a hammered double. The 325 was a bolt rifle, sometimes chambered in .30-30.Mescalero wrote:I am in Az., the shotgun is in N.M.

I said don't hold my feet to the fire,
I have a 311 also, to me the difference is cosmetic,
I may be wrong, there is ALWAYS the distict possibility I am wrong.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
Going off what Pete has said, it means good news!
It means it could be your dedicated black powder supository shotgun and thus you would be destined/blessed to hours of quality fun and admiration from your peers.
A win win situation

I have one that I shoot maybe a box and a half of high brass shells through a year. It is still nice and tight.

There's also a Stevens 5100 that's a hammerless model too that predated the 311. I've got a 20ga one.

Re: Double Barrel Shotgun
Yep I've also, got a Stevens 235 and it's got hammers. Like Pete44ru said you want to look at the shells made by RST,Pollywad, etc. that are made for older shotguns. If yours is like mine it has 2-5/8 " chambers and needs the shorter shells to work safely. I've had good luck with PolyWad vintingers 2-1/2 " shells. Pollywad and RST can be ordered direct online. The 235 is a good solid hammered double and if you feed it the proper loads it should give good service.

Pete44ru, would you happen to know what the LUP these lower pressure rounds are loaded at ?
