I spied a couple boxes of shotshells at the local Rural King, stuck them in the cart, then noticing they were different sizes, I realized I'd bought one that was 10-gauge. Not having a 10-gauge shotgun, I decided I'd try for return/exchange (in more financially plush times I'd have regarded the accident as divinely inspired and a sign I needed to purchase a 10-gauge shotgun forthwith). Since I do have a 12 gauge shotgun I like to feed proper ammo, I figured I'd be frugal and swap it for a box of 12 gauge next time I was in the store.
However, I was told this evening that "federal law prohibits us from exchanging a box of ammo after it has left the store".
Not sure I believe that, but I guess I'll tuck it away with the 40-year-old box of 25 ACP ammo I have, just in case I get a notion to splurge on a new gun at either end of the power spectrum...

Well, I can vouch for the abilities of the mighty 10 gauge. My Browning BPS does a swell job on waterfowl and turkey. I once fired an older single shot 10 gauge, but I can't say that was much fun! I bet you could swap that box of shells for some 12 gauge, it's just a matter of finding a guy thereabouts that has a 10.
In the meantime, you really do have both ends of the ammo power spectrum covered!

I can attest to the return restriction. I buy my shotshells at either Academy, Cabelas or Basspro during Bird season in the fall when they're all on sale. I usually get a case of 10 boxes and the last few times I bought shells at any of those stores the clerk insisted on opening the case and having me inspect and approve of the contents while explaining that there would be no returns of ammo.
I can understand this with meat, but shotshells?

AJMD- I have an American Arms 10 ga. double. Weighs 10 lbs. Real hoot to shoot. Traded all my Cabela's Visa points for a reloader, Make my own buckshot. A double load of double "ought" is impressive.
I think the return policies reflect liability fears on the merchants' behalf -- that someone could alter or reload a shell to dangerous specs, then return the box. I am not aware of a federal law on the matter.
I'm aware of no federal law, but I can understand why so many stores have the no ammo return policy. Liability could be huge. You'd also have good ol boys buys a box of ammo for deer season, loading up their rifle, then bringing the ammo back after they weren't able to kill any thing.
I owned a H&R 10 gauge singleshot for a few years in the early 80s. Back then you could still find the old 2 7/8" ammo and that stuff was great on squirrels and rabbits. I'd use the 3 1/2" stuff for duck & deer hunting. Another gun that I regret having to sell.
Still have a 3 1/2" #4 buckshot shell on my desk that somehow didn't go with the gun.

I got the Road Blocker version Its an absolute beast!
You could call yours "DD"----------------------drone down ??????
Recently heard them things could on occasion possibly go out of control and be a danger to public safety when being flown too low over private property and such etc. ???
By the pound that gun is cheap and never know when you need an 80yd turkey(or ??) getter

I had a pair of the Ithaca MAG-10's a year or two back !
Both 32" Full . One was a Field Grade and the other was the DeLuxe Grade . Both shot very well . Had one of the later made Remington SP-10's when they first came out in 1989 , used to shoot trap some with that one and 1 3/8 ounce handloads . Also had a Browning BPS-10 that did nicely !
My original intrest in the 10 gauge 3 1/2" was as a turkey gun with 2 1/4 ounces of shot and later it turned to 00 Buck and rifled slugs . I still like the 3 1/2" 10 gauge but have far more FUN shooting my SxS 10 gauge 2 7/8" guns a bit more .

I have both versions of the American Arms double barrels, the O/u and the sxs. Both 26" barrels, choke tubes, great turkey guns, and the O/U I really like for waterfowl also. Make good crow and coyote guns too!!!
Have an older H&R single shot, really don't recommend today's loads in them, they are VERY light weight guns!! NOt at all pleasant to shoot.
How can you only have one? I have the double for home defense and cowboy shooting fun. A Remington SP-10 with a 20 inch rifle sight barrel for deer and turkey and a 26 inch barrel for birds. Also and H & R single shot 36 inch full choke!
Its an absolute beast!
