Rossi 92 - Shooting SWCHP ?

Post by Pointshoot »

Hi guys. I did a search and didnt quite find the answer to my question, so thought I'd ask you. I came across a very slightly used Rossi 92 with 16" barrel in 357 at a local gunshop recently. I often shoot 38 Special. Much of it is 158gr SWCHP +P out of S&W service type revolvers. Do you gain much in performance with this load from a 16" barrel carbine ? (I don't think I've shot them out of a barrel any longer than 6".) And since I shoot much more 38 Special than 357, if I get the rifle and it has feeding problems - I'll optimize it for shooting 38 Specials. Does anyone else out there do this too ? Thanks in advance for your replies. Regards, - - -

That's a good question, Pointshoot. I haven't shot warm 38's in both rifle and pistol so I don't have a real-world answer. I did "ask" the QuickLoad ballistic program and it thinks you'd get about a 300 fps gain going from the revolver to the rifle (1050 vs. 1350 fps). I used the Hornady XTP 158 grain H.P. and H110 as my components for testing the load predictions.

In my limited experience I have noticed that the program usually overestimates revolver velocities a bit but is usually pretty close with rifles, so I'd guess you'll get at least the 300 fps differential and probably a bit more. Hopefully somebody with actual chronograph experience with this question will chime in here.

Some feed everything and some will have problems with length or bullet type, varies gun to gun of the same model. Nate Kiowa Jones here is Stevesgunz. He does very good work and sells parts and videos. If you did have to have him fix it you would also end up with a much better functioning gun.

Thanks guys. I did a little bit of reading on the forum earlier and it seems that each rifle has its own characteristics. I also had read about Nate Kiowa Jones and his DVD and work with 92s. Looks like I'll just have to try things out and see how it works for the particular rifle I get. Thought I'd post here and see if a lot of guys mighta said the 158gr SWCHP turns a .357 mag 92 into a 'jam-o-matic'

My 92 will load 158gr SWC no problem, but only in 357 Mag. It seems to detest 38s of any sort. But as the old saying goes, every gun is a law unto itself.

250-300FPS difference is about right for an increase with the Rifle over the Revolver.

Mine jokes on 38´s, except RNL.

I am gonna try Cowboy .38 and .357 loads, next.

And handload some 38+p loads with a L HP bullet for home defence.

And I´ll take the .357´s out in the woods.

But it sure would be dandy, if I could just use any .38 load I want to use. Isn´t there a "standard" recipe for this evil?

Faster to medium burn rate powders( Bullseye,231,Unique) as used in .38's will gain 200-250 fps in the rifle. Slower powders used in max .357 loads such as 2400,296,AA9 gain 350-400 fps in the rifle over the hand gun. Very little if any difference between 16" vs 20" barrel in the .38-.357.
