SWC safe for a levergun tube mag?

Post by DonP. »

I just picked up another lever gun, 20 inch Braztech/Rossi '92 in 357/38 to keep my two .45 16 inch SRC and 20 inch company in the gun cabinet.

I was going to start reloading some .357 this weekend.

When I reload for my 45 Colt rifles and handguns I usually use 200 or 250 grain LRNFP bullets. But I can't find any RN in .357 with the shortages and all. I do have two boxes of SWC in 158 grain and wondered if they are safe to use in a tube mag?

The Semi Wad Cutter tip is about the same size as the flat point on my usual RNFP bullets but I thought I'd check before I do anything really dumb.

They are safe to load in the magazine. Smooth, reliable feeding might be another issue. Some leverguns don't care for the SWC design. Won't know till you try though.

Great in the tube and they cycle fine in my Marlin.

My Rossi 92 .357 and my grandson's Marlin 1894 .357 handle the swc without any problems.

Safe? Yes. But as mentioned, feeding reliably might be an issue. Factors include OAL, nose length and meplat diameter. The sharp shoulder can also catch on thhe edge of the chamber mouth depending on a particular gun's geometry.

A food all-around alteernative is the "truncated cone." Very popular with cowboy action shooters where smooth feeding is necessary for fast shooting. Check out the bullets listed as "TC" or "T/C" by "Stormy Reinz" of Master Craft Bullets. For the 3 ir 4 of the bullets I use and don't cast, his quality is 1st rate.
