Gun Writer/Author John Wooters Has Gone Home

Longtime gun writer John Wootters passed away yesterday in Ingram, Texas.

Semi-retired, Wooters wrote "Hunting Trophy Deer" arguably the all-time best selling book written on deer hunting and was editor of Petersen's Hunting Magazine, and author of the monthly column "Buck Sense."

A former board member of the National Rifle Association, his work appeared in Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Field & Stream, American Sportsman, Gray's Sporting Journal, American Rifleman, Shooting Times, Guns & Ammo and others.

Arrangements are incomplete, but a memorial service is planned in Wootters' honor "in the very near future."

RIP, Mr. Wooters.....I'm sure I've read your copy, but, I haven't bought a gun rag in over twenty years, except the American Rifleman that I get every month....

The guy lived a full, complete, and an accomplished life. He was one of the gun writers in his prime when I started reading gun rags.

It seems that more and more of the writers that I grew up with are passing. I know it's the way of life, but it's sad that so much talent and style are fading away. I have to admit I don't read as many magazines these days, mostly because the writers just seem to print bare lifeless facts.

Wooters was in my top five all time list of outdoor writers !

Never will forget his Sako Mannlicher stocked 308 !

Or his Ruger 77 in 416 Taylor .

Unless I am remembering wrong, he also used a Winchester model 88 leveraction, a lot at one point in his life. I believe I remember reading that he wrote he shot the barrel out of it, way back there.

I believe he was a fan of the TC Contender and used the Navy arms Buffalo Hunter in his muzzleloader articles.I remember reading his muzzleloading hunting stories when I was a young fella.

RIP. I stopped buying the gun rags when writers of his caliber left. He appreciated Bigbore leverguns over smallbore magnums for the big stuff.

I read his articles in the 80's-90's.I remember of him then getting a detached retna,so he learned to shoot pistols with his left eye so he
could stay afield!I don't remember if he fully recoverd from it to shoot rifles like he once did.
