Just got myself my first 24" with an Octagon barrel! .357
Finally after searching high and low I found one so I nabbed it at what I think was a decent price from a local guy. It is brand new in the box and I paid $440
I had a 20" stainless octagon but sadly it was stolen. I of course picked the worst possible time to try and replace it with all the hysteria as of late.
So I came across this forum in my searching through google on an almost daily basis looking for an R92 of any flavor - I was really wanting another stainless or the case hardened blue but I was searching for almost 2-3 months for one and I just gave up and jumped when I saw my chance.
Anyhow, one thing in the old thread old thread that lead to me signing up for the forum was mention of these Lyman globe sights on Brownell's by COSteve
My confusion is what site do I use - he just says "Lyman 17A globe" but when you go to the page there are multiple options. It seems that the main difference is height? I have never replaced a sight on this rifle before - on the old one I just used irons and on this one I was going to do the same but I am reconsidering now with the longer 24" barrel.
Also, installation: Do I need a special tool?
I tried to reply to that thread but I think it is too old to ressurrect or something.
Anyone know what I should be doing here?

I'll see if I can bring up the thread where I did mine. COSteve may also chime in...
Here's the thread where I described setting mine up...

The same globe front (0.404") works equally well with the Williams FP, or the Taurus/Marble's Tang sight. I think it would be ok with the factory open sight but I'm not sure.
No special tools other than a decent brass hammer and punch, and solid surface to rest it on. I may have had to slip a piece of aluminum-can under the dovetail of the globe sight to 'snug' it; some of the Rossi guns seem to have a 'European' dovetail size that runs a bit larger than the 'American' sights do. No big deal though.

If you're going to use the factory rear barrel sight, use a dial caliper to measure from the bottom of the front sight dovetail to the top of the factory front sight. That should give you the height of the replacement sight you'll want. I've only used a drift pin (brass) and a mallet to change sights. A bit of leather around the octagon barrel to hold it in the vise, and a whack or two... or three or four and you're done. Reverse to install the new one.

Yep. Most stuff is supposed to go 'in' from the right side of a gun (as held to fire), and back 'out' towards the right side. (Easy to remember - don't use the 'wrong' side, use the 'right' one. . .Griff wrote:A bit of leather around the octagon barrel to hold it in the vise, and a whack or two... or three or four and you're done. While you're at it, look up using the 'search' function for "globe inserts" and you'll probably find a post from COSteve that details better inserts to use in the Lyman than the ones that come with it. I keep intending to order a set (they really are better), but get by ok with the regular Lyman ones that are 'free' with the Globe sight.
COSteve's the man when it comes to wringing the potential out of the .357 Mag in a 24" levergun, so be sure to scout out his posts on long-range accuracy, cast-loads, etc.
After reading them, I could see how a guy could make a .357 Levergun his 'everything' rifle.

Searching like crazy when I can manage to find time. Work has been crazy lately.AJMD429 wrote:While you're at it, look up using the 'search' function for "globe inserts" and you'll probably find a post from COSteve that details better inserts to use in the Lyman than the ones that come with it. 16-18 hour days for the past 3 weeks ... fun ... ugh ...
I am trying to find the signts you are mentioning - if there are better sights than the Lyman ones I would like to at least check them out!
Re: Just got myself my first 24" with an Octagon barrel! .35
I don't think the after-market 'insert' company I'm speaking of makes sights themselves, so I'd just get the Lyman Globe like I listed in the thread I referred to. It will come with 'good' inserts of various types. Later on, for a few bucks you can get the 'better' ones if you decide to. Like I said, I've procrastinated, and still really like using the Lyman Globe sight. Overall I prefer the Williams FP for rear sights, but the tang-types do add a few inches of sight radius, and do kind of 'look vintage' on an octagonal long-barreled rifle. The Williams FP is VERY durable (unlike relatively fragile tang sights), and adjustments are precise and repeatable.Donowitz wrote:I am trying to find the sights you are mentioning - if there are better sights than the Lyman ones I would like to at least check them out!

Howdy,
The good globe inserts that I've run into are made by Lee Shaver..
Available at Buffalo arms and others... (for Lyman 17A)

I just went to order the Taurus #62 Tang from Taurus and they are telling me that I need a freaking serial number to order a part!? The guy wouldn't let me order it - has anyone ever had this problem???

Any way I could talk you into ordering the Marble's instead, yeah I know they cost more but well worth it, I had a Taurus and was very unhappy with it. No clicks on the adjustment, backlash in the treads and the elevation setting changed every time I folded the sight down and back.
Re: Just got myself my first 24" with an Octagon barrel! .35
I wish I could afford it right now I just can't. Money is tight so the $33 is a lot easier to spend than over $100 - if I hate it I can just sell it or return it or give it away to someone who needs it or something.jnyork wrote:Donowitz wrote:I just went to order the Taurus #62 Tang from Taurus and they are telling me that I need a freaking serial number to order a part!? I managed to get the order through by googling up a few images and "borrowing" a serial number. I think it is absolutely BS that you have to give a serial number to order parts - I made sure to express my displeasure at doing so before being forced to do so.

I've got one of the Navy Arms Rossis in 357 with a 24" barrel. It's a tack driver and would be the last gun I'd let go.
