Nylon hose for anti-glare?
Rifle scope glare:
Rather than hassling with purchasing a flip-open device with some type of baffle; has anybody tried nylon hose with, say, a rubber band as a glare deflector? I would think that the fine mesh would not interfere much with the light transmission to the shooter.
If so, how successful was it in a real-life hunting situation (e.g. dew clinging to the material or other unforeseen elements)? I have not had the opportunity to make it to the range these last several months, so I am hoping that this has already been researched!

Just my $0.02, but IMO you'd be better off with a sunshade, aka: an objective lens extension (like applying the inner core/tube from a roll of TP onto a straight-tubed scope
).

Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
It would only work if you use the support hose
. The lacy kind might be less obstructing, as they would allow better ventilation on your legs, er scope.

Of course, you might want to waterproof it with Cling Wrap.......

I guess I just don`t see a need for such a thing for sporting rifles.
That said, hunting on a sunny day is a rare thing in WA state.

Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
I never, ever try to wipe off water on the lens..that seems to make it smeared....I can see thru the drops if I just leave it alone.....I clean them with a minuscule dot of Pledge on a clean piece of suitable material.

Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
Mebbe I'll try spraying some tp rolls with an enamel based black spray paint. I've decided to remove the paper, first.
But then again, if I used a full roll of Charmin on the scope, I'd be prepared when Nature calls...
I base my concerns on some surveillance incidents in "another life" when a glint of reflected sunlight or even an outside security light or street lamp would give away a telephoto lens or periscope. Common windowscreen was used to minimize reflection, and one time a ladies nylon stocking was used.
No questions, guys - it was strictly bizzness.
Anyway, don't want to spook game in a sunny canyon.

JohndeFresno,
Since no one was able to answer your question, your mission when you get to the range is to actually try it out and report back to everyone
I for one believe it will work

I saw a reflection reducing shade once. It might have been considered for a tactical application, I can't remember now. The one I saw for a riflescope was about 1.5" long and had a pattern of honey comb shaped holes in the end that were 1/16" in dia. The idea was that light would only pass thru the holes when the scope was held at exactly the right angle, thus reflected light going back towards the target area would be greatly reduced.
I wasn't interested in it at the time but I did think it was a novel idea at the time.

A little anti fog RainX and you're problems will be a thing of the past. Just make sure to start off using it sparingly and be sure to polish it in real good the first time you apply it. A little dab will do you ... I'm talking the end of a Q-tip dab.

Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
I use an actual glare deflector that I got from SWFA, but anything that blocks the direct reflection is better than nothing.
Haven't tried it, but it seems like something simple like a panel from a nylon stocking would work very well if it wasn't too close to the glass, e.g. on the end of a even a short sun-shade.

Don't need to at my rifle range - they already have TP in the privy!UncleBuck wrote:JohndeFresno,

Yup - saw that at the Midway site!Rusty wrote:I saw a reflection reducing shade once. It might have been considered for a tactical application, I can't remember now. Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
I didn't think of that - some distance away from material. I remember now that had to do that when I used screen or netting in front of my lens in an earlier era. Thanks.FWiedner wrote:I use an actual glare deflector that I got from SWFA, but anything that blocks the direct reflection is better than nothing.

I like the idea of just slipping something onto the scope, or mounting soft nylon material with a rubber band on the few occasions when the sun would present a problem. I did not want to bother with with a permanent flip up mount, as the various factory diffusers require.
Re: Nylon hose for anti-glare?
I have done the nylon hose trick. It works but can cause a slight loss of clarity. Better to just put some tape over the lens to reduce the amount of reflective surface.
