looking for Buckeye companion for '92 in 32-20

Post by MacEntyre »

in late 2011 I bought a 93 year old Winchester 92 in 32-20, & shortly afterwards found a 96 year old S&W revolver in 32-20 to go with it. All was well until I got tired of keeping revolver loads separate from rifle loads. So I traded the S&W. Then I learned about the Ruger Blackhawk Buckeye in 32-20. If what I have learned is correct, the Ruger is strong enough to use the same ammo as the rifle.

If anyone comes across one, please let me know!

Or you can find a commonly available Ruger Blackhawk in 30 carbine and have someone ream the cylinder for 32-20. :D ----------------Sixgun

Check over on the Ruger forum, they come up every now and then.

Question, why wouldn't a new Colt SAA in 32-20 handle heavy loads. Is it not thick and heavy enough. :?

There are a couple of Rugers on Gunbroker today. One is a convertable Vaquero 32-20/32 Mag. and the other is a Convertable Buckeye being sold as part of a set to include the 10MM/38-40. Both seem a bit pricey though.

I think a SAA would be fine, but the Ruger is IMHO a much more durable design, probably priced a bit less, but definitely not as cool.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I've been watching every revolver in 32-20 on GB... the buckeyes are definitely pricey, or paired and therefore out of my reach. I could buy two for $505 each but I would have to break up the pair and sell one.

If I got a shooter grade 30 carbine Ruger and paid to have the cylinder reamed, would I be able to keep it below $500 total? Perhaps if I keep looking, I may find a 30 carbine Blackhawk for just under $400. That could work.

Has anyone here converted a 30 carbine Blackhawk to 32-20?

Somewhere on this site (go to 'home page") Paco Kelly writes about converting 30 carbines and 32 mags to 32-20. (IIRC :D )---------------------Sixgun

I wonder if anyone ever did that to the leveraction .30 Carbine Marlin used to make. Those were nice, and the .32-20 is a more practical cartridge from what I've heard.

Cimarron arms make a Colt Clone in 32-20 with 32 h&r cylinder. My friend has both Rugers in 32-20 . They are quite heavy since they have plenty of steel in the cylinder and barrel. They shoot good though.

You know Doc, I'm not so sure of that. As much as I like the 32-20, the 30 carbine handles higher pressures better as the case is much stronger. I use 32-20 bullets in my 30 carbine reloads....I just size them to .309. The 32-20 might make a better revolver cartridge due to the rim which makes case length for forgiving which makes chambering easier on a long case. --------------------Sixgun

My warm 32-20 (.313 bullet) Marlin loads would be a pretty tight squeeze down a .308 bore 30 Carbine barrel. I have a Uberti 32-20 and can't believe that with all that metal, it can't handle warm (but sane) loads. I think Paco said the same in his article on the 32-20.

Well, I bought a pair of matched serial number Buckeyes... the 32-20 is a shooter, and the 38-40 is a safe queen. I'll split them up and sell the 38-40.

If anyone is interested in a lightly used 1989 Blackhawk Buckeye in 38-40, let me know!

I've got an old, relined '92 in .32-20, a Remington Model 25 in .32-20
and
A Buckeye convertible Blackhawk .32-20/.327 Fed. Mag
Back when we first started to load 'em, I got the plant gunsmith to run the .327 chamber reamer into the .32 H&R mag cylinder's chambers. Probably one of the first guns in that caliber out of captivity.

Sorry, I wouldn't choose lightly about selling mine.

I want to do that. I have read that you could shoot 32 S&W, 32 S&W Long, 32 H&R Magnum, as well as 327 Fed Mag... but isn't there a head space problem?

Why should there be a headspace problem? They headspace on the rim, not the case mouth.

Throw in 32 Auto - they have a slight rim.

Glad to hear you found one. I had one years ago and thought it was ridiculously heavy for a .32-20 and
sold for twice what I paid for it. :D

It is ridiculously heavy, but it can shoot all of the rifle loads I make for the 92... no need to make different loads for revolver and rifle, and keep them separate.

I have a box of 32 auto around here somewhere... gonna give it a try!
