Cimarron Model 1892

Post by kingemandigger »

Hello all,
The purpose of this post is to give a quick review on the Cimarron/Armi Sport Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle. I've noticed that the enternet is quite lacking in commentary about this particular gun, probably because it is so new on the marketplace. I hope this helps with any perspective buyers, since, I was like you a couple of months ago, not really sure if it was a good rifle, or which brand of rifle I should get. I'll tell ya, Armi Sport in Italy has had a pretty bad rep in the past, but the rifles Chiappa puts out now seem to have corrected any flaws previoucley associated with them. Also, Cimarron only takes the best, so that may be a contributing factor. This is just my experience with one gun though.

Back in December, I had been looking for an 1892 pattern rifle for a while. As for my choices, Rossi, Winchester, and Cimarron were the three. Rossi being cheaper but well established, and winchester being made in Japan and having many warning labels and a clunky saftey, I jumped on a Cimarron although it was imported from Armi Sport in Italy which has been known to have problems in the past. I ordered it through buffalo arms and it ran around $950. Just recieved it today and I have to say that it is quite a beautiful gun. I attached a few photos taken right after the unboxing. The case hardening looks great. a family member actually mistaked it for some type of pearl :D The wood is also nice. I do eventually have to get a leather but pad to extend the length of pull a little, since I'm 6 feet tall.

As for the lever, it is incredibly smooth. I have absolutely no experience with leverguns, at all, and even I could tell it was buttery as hell. there is no clinking and no parts in the action stick durring cycling. Very happy because this is where problems were occuring in some of the horrer stories I have read. The action dosen't stick open and everything is tight. I also cycled a round through it (LRN) and it functioned flawlessley. there was some scraping on the case, but shouldn't be a problem.

Overall I couldn't be happier with the rifle. Its certainly not a lemon and I would recomend it to anyone wanting a quality, accruate replica of the originals for hunting, plinking, or just hanging on the wall. Cant wait to load up some 300 grainers with 12 grains of blue dot or 16 grains of 2400. these should satisfy my craving for a little recoil. Ill also test out some factory cowboy loads. Hope this helps, and I will get some range results up as soon as possible, just depends on when I can get some boolits cast out of my new lee mold. I'd also like some recomendations about reloading for this particular gun. thanks

Nice rifle. What Caliber? I can tell you one thing. The steel buttplate don't feel too good with heavier loads.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Its a .45 colt. I'm definitely looking into getting a leather butt plate, not just for length of pull but for recoil as well. Should be fun to shoot.

Not a thing, but the picture makes it look a bit more hubba hubba than it is in normal lighting.

That rifle came with some pretty wood for sure.

The Chiappas (Cimarron, etc) only have the original type Win half cock safety. No intrusive switches, rebounders etc.

I second that, the gun is quite an accurate replica of the orriginals, no warnings, no saftey (other than the hammer half cock), etc.

Like I said, I would post some range results regarding my new rifle. Just got it out there yesterday, and in a nutshell, it was superbly smooth, functioned well, acurrate, and got a few compliments on appearances. I couldn't be happier. The rounds I made up (11.5 & 12.5 grains of blue dot and 16 grains of 2400 under a 300 grain hard cast boolit w/ GC and WLP) all worked great and definitely had sufficient recoil.
