OT - Going to be out for a few days

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Almost posted this as a "prayer request", because I'll need them!

I "volunteered" to help chaperone my son's 4th grade class on a 2 night/3 day field trip to the Johns Island preserve. The trip starts tomorrow. No electronics - meaning no laptop, no internet, no cell phones. I'm not sure which will be worse - being totally cut off from the rest of the world, or watching a bunch of wild 4th graders! I could never be a teacher - I have little patience for children who act up and/or who don't do as they are told. This is going to be tough duty!

Well, my son will be there, so we'll have fun. Still, assuming I'm not committed to the nearest looney bin, I'll catch you guys Wednesday night! :D

Be safe while I'm incommunicato!!!

Don't worry Ysabel, you won't have to be transported to the nearest looney bin as you'll already be in one! Good luck and God Speed brother!

Well, maybe it will be good for them to be exposed to an ornery, irracsible, ogre who has no use for their shenanigans for a couple of days - the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and all. :D

I survived!

Counted to 10 about a thousand times, but I made it. It was actually a great experience. Tried to make sure I was helping all the kids I was assigned to and not just my son. Lots of activities, and though the kids whined about every one when we started each, they had fun with them all. The place was run by enviro-hippie wannabe's, so that got a little annoying, but I bit my tongue for the most part. Chimed in just enough for them to know I wasn't going to let them preach to the kids. Well, that and I wore my NRA ball cap the entire time!

Really had to bite my tongue about some of the boys. Half of them had hair as long as the girls. Saw one with an ear-ring - in 4th grade - and it took every ounce of control to refrain from asking him if he was wearing a maxi-pad as well! He probably wouldn't have understood the reference anyway.

The first night I did have to lower the hammer after the twerps wouldn't shut up. Let them yap for a half hour after lights out. Figured a well-deserved beating wouldn't go well with the place, school or local law, so had to "inspire" them a different way. So I told them that their teacher had asked me to report if they would listen, and that she'd gladly assign a 10-page writing assignment if I let her know of any problems. They shut up immediately. You just have to figure out the appropriate levers with what you have at hand!

My back is killing me though. I don't have a good one to begin with, and sleeping on a hard wooden bunk with a thin foam pad didn't help. Probably 4 hours sleep total between Monday and Tuesday nights. Still, it was well worth it. At one point we were watching dolphins while hiking on the beach, and 4 of them came to within 15 feet of the shore. My son will never forget that, and I was happy to be there with him to enjoy such a memory (of course, it was everything I could do to keep him out of the water - me too)! :D

Now I just need to heal up for the Cub Scout camping trip this weekend!!!

Thanks for all your well wishes!!! 8)

I knew you'd have a blast despite the inevitable minor aggrivations!

About six years ago I agreed to chaperone some 8th graders on a four day field trip to Wallops Island Marine Science Center near Chincoteague Island and the Wallops Island tracking station. We actually stayed in what was once the barracks for the Naval Station. My daughter went, but I made sure I was with one of the other groups in the class sessions and field trips. We got wet, muddy, and incredibly bug-bitten (173 bites on me, that I could see) but had a great time. The kids in our group netted a rare needlefish and a couple other amazing creatures. One such organism was a something that looked like a half-rotten grapefruit. It was a sponge, the same type that the Sponge Bob cartoon character was modeled after. The instructor told us that this sponge organism when placed in a blender and pureed, then poured into a tank of water from its natural habitat will in 30 days reform itself into a near-identical copy of what it was prior to getting Osterized.

And we humans are so "advanced."

Anyway, Kid, I have no doubt that your memories of that trip will last a lifetime.

Welcome back!

Noah

glad you had a great time and you have made memories that you will have a life time. Often the things we don't want to do turn out to be the fondest memories. Blessings.

(and by the way, I have three earings. :D )

Except hemorrhoid surgery. Didn't want to do that, and it's not a fond memory.

Unless I miss my guess, you're a tad bit older than 4th grade Mike!

I'm old fashioned - I don't think men should have long hair or ear rings. However, the world would be a darn boring place if everything conformed to my "wants" or ways of thinking. I like cats - and some here find that unmanly! Diversity is the spice of life!!! I have no problem with any adult doing anything they want, as long as such actions do no impede others enjoying their rights.

Still, it's darn near child-abuse to let a boy run around like that!!!
