mag loaders

Post by Mescalero »

My hands are pretty well beat up and I have trouble loading pistol mags.
Anyone use one of the pistol mag loaders?
Recommendations?

The "Uplula" pistol variant of the LULA loaders works well.

Designed by an Israeli guy some years back originally to help out his son's unit when mass-loading mags. The pistol version is nearly idiotproof and works even on larger-capacity mags where the last couple rounds are tough.

I got my dad one (he's 65) and he can now load mags a lot easier past the first few rounds.

I use the ADCO Superthumb loader for my double column pistol mags.
It is simple and cheap.
For my .22 mags, I cut a 3/8" X 1-1/32" slot in a piece of scrap 1/8" aluminum.
It is free and works perfectly. :D

Another vote for the UPLULA. I am more awkward - thus slower - with them than I'd like, but at least loading isn't a pain.

(literally)

People at the LGS love them and will often use them to load just one or two rounds.

Another vote for the UpLula. Kinda expensive, but sure does work.

I have a sort of 'generic' one I got somewhere that is basically a squared-off 'C' that fits around the magazine, and on its side up comes a stout piece of the thick sheet metal that goes up behind the magazine and loops over the back edge to push down on the follower. It works for 9mm and .45 ACP double-stack magazines really well, and is easy just to toss in the pocket. Don't know the brand.

The little plastic ones that fit around the Ruger pistol magazines and push down on the side-button are wonderful, too.

I have yet to find one I really like for .223, but I haven't looked all that hard yet.

The original LULA for AR magazines works equally well as a loader/unloader, usually best if you clamp the mag between your legs and use one hand to flip the lever and the other to drop in rounds.

With a can of ammo handy I've loaded a 30 round mag in maybe 10 seconds.

Considering I was loading about a hundred mags, the fact that the lever takes all pressure off your hands is nice. You can single-load AR mags pretty quick, but the LULA is quicker and more sure.

The 'strip' version is even faster, you stick the mag on the tray, line up 30 and BLAM they go in all in one shot. Takes more practice though.

Stripper clips work pretty well on ar mags, but the tabs break off eventually. Nice for keeping ammo available though, if not for regular usage.

Yep, the Uplula for handguns, and the Lula for rifles. Heck, those and Moon & Demoon tool and you've just about covered everything.

You might need to explain Moon & De-Moon.

The only mags that are a problem are the XDM double stack for .45acp....1911s, and a couple others are no sweat. The loader that came with the XDM is quirky, but decent.

Moon tools are for loading full moon clips used in revolvers that use rounds normally used in semi autos (like the S&W revolvers that fire .45 acp). Thought there have been conversions that allow revolvers firing rimmed cases to allow the use of moon clips.

The de-moon tool is use to remove the cases from the clip for reloading.

That should do it Mescalero, but your right, I sometimes forget that relative newbies won't know what things like that are for.
