BOOKS - practical, semi-political, survival-oriented reading

Post by AJMD429 »

I just finished reading several interesting books, and over the years have read several which I think helped me develop a positive (vs. defeatist) attitude about the future even if things deteriorate (which I hope we can prevent 'politically', but of course some things like famine, meteorite impact, or whatever are not controllable).

Here are some of the books I'd recommend... (links embedded)

1. "To Try Men's Souls" - about Washington's battle for the Republic; not 'current', but I think it serves to remind us that whatever trials and tribulations WE think we're enduring, others before us have done ten times as much to obtain freedom.

2. "Unintended Consequences" - a novel that relates to the 20th Century 'gun control' phenomenon.

3. "Patriots" - May have some 'practical skills' embedded in the very readable, and not-too-far-fetched novel.

4. "Build the Perfect Bug-Out Bag" - one of many books I've seen on the politically-incorrect but basic topic of what to keep in one's "BOB"....

5. "Countryside Magazine" - Good 'basic off-the-grid living' magazine.

I think it could be USEFUL if members posted books that are helpful for surviving 'hard times' - whether they be due to asteroid impact, famine, Obanomics, gun-control frenzy, or whatever else.

It also goes without saying that the Bible, or whatever holy book you find guiding for your particular religious faith, is going to be foundational reading.

For many of us, even if we're lucky enough to avoid the major calamaties we keep seeing on the horizon, it would be nice to just be able to read helpful information to become more independent with our own gardening and home-repairs, self-sufficiency, etc...

I encourage other forum members to post their helpful reads. We may all want to get them in hard-copy in our libraries before they are rendered illegal, or an EMP wipes out the non-hardcopy versions...

I haven't read them in a number of years, but I recall that the Firefox books had a lot of good info for folks who are interested in the old ways.

A RIFLEMAN WENT TO WAR by H.W. McBride and the first of his books, THE EMMAGEES. He started out as a machine gunner before taking up as a sniper.

BACKWOODS HOME is the magazine MOTHER EARTH NEWS started out to be.

Backwoodsman MAGAZINE put out by Charlie Ritchy is a hard one to throw away when you're done with it.

ONE SECOND AFTER, a novel written about a Carolina college town and how they handle an EMP blast.

ALAS BABYLON tells of life in rural Florida after a nuclear exchange.

As well as "98.6 Keeping your butt alive." That is my bedside reader right now, as a matter of fact. I recieved both of these for Christmas a year ago from my darling bride. Both are good reads. I also recomend the Foxfire series. I have many of them. Then there is the Boy Scout Handbook that will give basic information on all sorts of survival tips and technique and it seems they are written so that even a teenager can understand and follow the information. :o :?.....wait... a... minute.............. I have a whole collection of them going back to the 30's.

Backwoods Home Magazine has a lot of usefull info in it also . Its along same line as Backwoodsman magazine.

Another source of info and most of which is free for the asking is at the local County Extension Office.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I just thought of another one, A COUNTRY ENCYCLOPEDIA by Carla Emory.
It covers everything from birthing your young to burying your dead, killin, cannin and raisin.

And this one for free as a download, the Later Day Saints Prep Manual www.ldsavow.com,
