Stain to Match Finish on a 1950s Savage Model 99

Post by Remington40x »

I took my Model 99 deer hunting this year and it was wet, wet, wet - so much so that it actually removed some of the color from the stock on the rifle. I'd like to refinish the rifle (and seal the wood at the same time). I know Tru-oil or something similar should seal the wood, but I'd like to restain the wood first to get the color consistent throughout.

Can any of you Savage experts suggest a stain to use for that purpose and the correct color?

Thanks.

I completely strip the wood, alot of factory finishes cover up some nice wood with figure in it , I then cover with tung oil multiple coats and wipe done with 4 o wool for a satin finish . A 50's 99 should have some nice walnut in it. Gotta love them 99's use one myself. danny

Plus 1.....I'm thinking you'll like the color of the walnut just fine....you can darken it later if you don't like it....I really don't like all those "fake finishes" they put on these days :(

Here are a couple of examples to work from 1954

As you can see, quite a variance in the wood.

Old Savage:

Like the top one in particular. What did you use to refinish it?

That is factory finish, I think the bottom one may have been stripped and oiled.

I would first use Formby's Furniture Refinisher, following the directions on the can, to strip off the old finish so the color's even to start with. (NO sandpapering, please)

After it's been stripped at least overnite (to thoroughly dry), I would suggest a 75/25 stain mixture of MinWax Black Walnut (75%) & MinWax Red Mahogany (25%), premixed in a glass jar (whatever) & wiped on to dry at least overnite prior to lightly wiping with a NEW pad of OOOO steel wool, followed by a magnet swipe & days/coats of TruOil @ the rate of one (1) coat per day, until the finish is where YOU like it.

Please remember to TruOil the forend & buttstock inletting & under the BP & PG cap for the best wet weather protection - saturate those areas until they will take no more TruOil.

After a week or so, I would suggest an application of a good paste wax, like Johnson's.
