Marlin 336: Problem With Loading Spring
Hello All,
I haven't had this rifle long, but I have taken it to the range to test fire and sight in w/o any issues. Took it hunting a couple of weeks ago, and though I didn't get the chance to fire it then, I did have a problem when cycling out the two rounds in the magazine. Next cartridge would not release to be loaded. Upon examining the mechanism, I found the loading spring (see link to parts diagram below) was not seated properly. It was "falling" into the receiver (see photos).
Anybody got any ideas what might be wrong with this? I've not yet taken it apart.

Thanks, from New Orleans

Re: Marlin 336: Problem With Loading Spring
That's called a "loading gate" or a "spring cover" rather than a loading spring.
And stinkycat is right, you just need to carefully tighten the screw directly to the rear of it.
I'd suggest opening the action, and removing the bolt, then slipping your finger in and holding the loading gate in it's proper position as you carefully tighten the little screw.

What They said and "Welcome" to the Fire. You came to the right place for assistance and We/They don't charge like those other places.

Thanks Perry, Joe and Stinky.
I appreciate the guidance. What about the torque setting on that screw? I'm wondering also, do you have a recommendation in gunsmithing drivers? I recently purchased the Wheeler Torque Driver on Amazon. Still need a good set of driver bits.
Cheers!

Good and snug is GOOD ! Keep an eye on that screw after this.
I go over my guns with a screw driver to check them for tightness
every time I clean them.

Tiny dab of Blue Loctite on that screw and your troubles are over for good. Just nice and snug, no more.
Re: Marlin 336: Problem With Loading Spring
Well................ "IF" the screw's already tight, then the loading gate has lost it's spring tension & needs to be replaced ($12 @ Numrich).
Jes' sayin' ....................................................
(To replace it, open the lever 1/3, remove it's pivot, then the lever, then the bolt, then the ejector.
Remove the buttstock, relieve MS pressure & remove the MS, then remove the 5 screws holding the bottom metal to the receiver & drop it down/out for E-Z access to R&R the loading gate. Assemble in reverse order.

"then the ejector" - if it hasn't already fallen out on it's own - don't ask how I knowPete44ru wrote:Well................ "IF" the screw's already tight, then the loading gate has lost it's spring tension & needs to be replaced ($12 @ Numrich).
