1886 question
I was wondering if anyone else with a newer Miroku Win 86 had the same problem I do. Went to try some loads out yesterday with 350 gr Hornady's only to find out they wouldn't chamber. They chamber in my 1895, and checked out ok for OAL with a mic. Is this just my gun or is it common? I haven't tried any cast bullets yet and have only shot 300 grain loads so far.

The problem is that the SAAMI spec for the 45-70 indicates zero throat. Thankfully, most companies do not follow the spec to the letter and put a little throat ahead of the chamber or at least a slight angle to break the edge. The Japanese followed the spec to the letter. You can always rent a pull through throating reamer and fix it.

My Miroku Winnie is a 45-90 and it doesn't have any problems with either 45-70 or 45-90 rounds cycling through it. I'd give a range report but I haven't shot it yet. With the weather changing that'll soon be rectified.
The 45-90 rounds are factory loaded w/300 grn cast bullets. Larger bullets may give me a problem, we'll see.

I thought that my usual rental outfit had them but I just called and he doesn't. But he is going to talk to the reamer maker and try to get one made. Let's take a head count. How many would rent such an item if it were made available? The more that chime in, the quicker it would be available. The squeeky wheel gets the grease.
It sounds like an interesting idea, but I'd want to see a technical drawing and know exactly what was going to happen before I started modifying my gun's chamber.Leverluver wrote:I thought that my usual rental outfit had them but I just called and he doesn't. I can see the value of having a forcing cone for certain loads, but the loads I'm shooting don't seem to be shaving lead at the rifling start, but maybe I'm not looking close enough.

Had the same thing happen to my browning montana. Instead of rechambering, what I did was call up Buffalo Arms and ordered a canelure tool, measured the chamber, subtracted .010 from overall length, and made me a new canelure on the bullets. Worked very good and I didn't have to do anything to the rifle.
About renting the reamer, I really don't know a whole lot about them. The thing I worry about is if somebody renting one and causing damage to the reamer which could cause the same kind of damage to somebody else's chamber. But heck, I have never used one and may be all wet behind the ears.

Kimwcook;
WRT your Winchester/Miroku .45-90. - Some .45-90 rounds will not pass through the loading gate, but can be single loaded by inserting into the chamber. I have done this with the 500 gr .45-90 Sharps cartridges with pointed leat bullets and they drop right in without touching any rifling. I suspect that no cartridges longer than the COL will load through the gate or feed through the action.
Fortunately for the handloader, there are a number of bullets up in the range from 300 to 450 gr that have a crimping cannelure located such that it keeps the COL just under the 1886 .45-90 COL limit. I suggest that when you prepare to load such ammo, you post here asking for bullet and load suggestions for your rifle and you should get several useful responses.
