M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
New from Hornady:
http://www.hornady.com/store/30-M1-CARB ... -GR-FTX-CD
To which I say OUTSTANDING. I've thought for years that the M1 Carbine makes a dandy home defense bedside rifle, and this ammo just stokes that fire.

It's about time, my 110 gr. hollowpoint loads have doing well for many years.

Absolutely not... no one else does, so let's not be the first. Looks like the Revolution may start first in Illinois on Friday January 4, 2013.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
Now back on topic...
Thanks for that OP. Looks promising, I'd like to try them out. Another M1 Carbine load I'd like to check out is one loaded by Corbon or Double Tap using the Barnes 100 gr flat base 30 Carbine bullet, #30800.
Corbon ammo
Double Tap ammo
And I agree with the other post on making these bullets available as reloading components.
(I was able to get my hands on some of those Barnes 30 Carbine bullets though
)!

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
I worked up HD loads with these Speer 110grn HP bullets years ago and the one's I've shot at small game did the job. I don't know what Hornady shot their competitor's bullets at or how slowly they shot them to produce the poor results they show on their website but the recovered bullets I've seen look more like their FTX examples. In addition, they feed through both my M1 Carbines just fine too.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
Like I said, mine have been working well for years.
It always gives me chuckle when I hear people say .30 carbine is not good for ( insert any description ).
They must be unwilling to work with reloads.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
One of my favorite guns (GI Carbine). Great to see this exiting new load/bullet for.

"Now back on topic"... abcollector, My post was "On Topic" as per the GC, no expanding bullits- only FMJ and NO wooden Boolits.
Now these are some good looking rounds but at $35 a box, wow. I have 3 Carbines and a Revolver chambered for them, I'm pretty well covered for ammo but a few more couldn't hurt.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
The Winchester/Remington JSP load that's been around forever works well too.
Jim Cirillo, who's shot more people than probably all of us put together, and many others thought the little M1 with those was a handy piece to use and effective.
Side note I knew a sportfisherman first mate who said it also worked very effectively on gaffed sharks with a shot to the head.
Odd things you learn some days.....

Steve, I have used this bullet alot in 30wcf and 308W and it does a good job on varmints.COSteve wrote:I worked up HD loads with these Speer 110grn HP bullets years ago and the one's I've shot at small game did the job. I have down loaded to around 800fps also and it seems to still lose all the exposed lead up front in small game.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
Sir, the "Now back on topic" post I added was because of my previous post, I didn't want to take away from the OP's topic so felt that I should add more to continue the topic on the 30 Carbine ammunition. I didn't mean to insinuate that your post was incorrect, I apologize if that's how it came off.pwl44m wrote:"Now back on topic"... abcollector, My post was "On Topic" as per the GC, no expanding bullits- only FMJ and NO wooden Boolits.

I like the 30 Carbine myself and it is a great weapon system that has a place in one's collection for multiple uses. It's great to see a company like Hornady add to that capability as well as the other companies out there. I also agree that the soft point bullets that have been out there are still working just fine as others have mentioned.
Steve, did you fine you needed to seat the Speer JHP a tad deeper than the cannulure for it to feed? I've also had some aftermarket magazines be problematic in feeding this bullet. USGI magazines do seem better most of the time for this style of bullet.
Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
No offense taken Here and I find sometimes trying to splain Urself just makes the hole deeper.
I was just relegating to the current state of affairs if that ammo would be legal to use.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
I agree that as an older design, it does loose some of the lead but it seems to work just fine for what I wanted it to do. That said, if I found some of those bullets for sale, I'd be tempted to buy a box and give them a try. Also, as others have said, I agree that the M1 Carbine is a much maligned firearm and I think it's perfect as a home defense weapon, especially for my wife because she is much more comfortable (and accurate) with it than with a pistol. Besides, with a 30rd mag inserted, she can make an effective stand in the bedroom until help arrives.Nath wrote:COSteve wrote:Steve, I have used this bullet alot in 30wcf and 308W and it does a good job on varmints.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
Ain't that somethin'! I spent the last 6 months working with a 1970 produced (but was NIB) M-1 Carbine. One of those repro's (Universal). Being thrifty, I was determined to make the 115 gr. gas check 32-20 bullet work and feed. This has a wide front meplat and I size 'em at .309, then seat it in front of 12 grains of 2400. Took me some grinding on the gun and experimentation with seating depths, but I succeeded.
Funny thing about the M-1 Carbine. You will get 4 shots in 3" and then a flyer shoots 6" off to the right, left, or wherever it wants to go--nature of the beast
I can rip out several hundred in an afternoon for a little more than $10.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
Six,
My friend Kieth used to shoot a .30 carbine cast load ( he cast them hard ) it would put 5 for 5 through a 1950 chevy truck rim @ 100.

Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
My 1943 NPM is about average accuracy as it will group about 4"-5" at 100yds consistently. My new Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine is another thing. It will group 2" at 100yds consistently using Rainier plated 110grn bullets I bought back in 2006 for $22.00/K (A far cry from the $108.00/K they want now for Berrys). BTW I shot them at 1,950fps so that pretty well debunks that old wives tale that plated bullets aren't accurate and can't be fired at velocities over 1,200fps without losing their plating.Sixgun wrote:Ain't that somethin'! Re: M1 Carbine Critical Defense load
I just love the number of " myths " that have sprung up about the carbine.
