actually, they found some Mayan drawings in a Guatemalan cave (the scribes always lived and worked in caves) that reference dates after 12-21-12. The point about the Mayan calender is the solstice completes a 20,000-year cycle, and the calendar starts all over again. Even the end of the Codex that they say shows a world calamity, is a prayer to the rain god to be generous.

btw, if you've never seen Apocalypto, you might want to - it probably shows the Mayans in a much more accurate light than any of the modern romanticizing. Aztecs, Toltecs and Mayans were all death and blood cults. Cortez was the good guy.

This is my take. I have been waiting for this for some 30 years now, since Leanard Nemoy and "In Search Of" back in the seventies. I loved that stuff. As for the calender, I always understood that it ended when there was a predictable alignment of the galaxy and point in time. Sort of like we watch for equinoxes and soltices now. Then there was the prophicy of "The Teachers" returning at that point. I for one can't wait. God knows we need help and direction and if they are coming, come on! If the end of the world thing is in the cards, and I don't think so, then I am firing up the Harley and riding right into it, hammer down, no helmet, packing heat. WHEEEeeeeeeeee......

So, for those that are into this, this will be the last time for 88 years that we have a month, day and year (last 2 digits) the same. We've been lucky the last decade with 1/1/01, 2/2/02, etc. It won't happen again in our life time, and probably not in the life time of our kids.
