16 rounds of 44 mag

Post by Pitchy »

Been kicking around what i want to carry this winter snowshoeing and cook outs.
I have been carrying just a rifle, my Marlin cowboy 45-70 but i`m liking this set up.
Rossi 92 and Ruger Vaquero 44 mag, 16 rounds loaded should do it.

Good choice - always worked for me! (But I like the .45-70 too!)

It should be plenty for anything native to North America. Having a rifle and handgun with the same ammunition is never a bad idea.

That's about as good a combo as you can get. I know that 45-70 will bring down anything in your neck of the woods, but I think this will should do just fine too.

An excellent choice. A pair of light and reliable guns chambered in a compact and powerful cartridge. Weight and balance is paramount when snowshoeing. From a rifle a 44mag is very impressive. One of my favorite combo cartridges.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

.44 is a useful caliber...!

A "pair" of .44 Magnums in handgun and carbine covers most needs pretty well, and a complete "set" of .44 caliber guns (adding a CCW-piece in .44 Special and a longer-range rifle in .444 Marlin), can pretty well cover the spectrum out to a couple hundred yards.

If 16 rounds of .44 Mag don't stop whatever it is, you prolly never had a chance anyway.

Great looking outfit Pitchy! I have no .44 mags, but my Navy Arms M92 and Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt is very similar!

Well, you could always add a BFR in 45-70 to your Marlin 45-70 for a combo...

Went out and shot 10 rounds through it at 50 yards and not that impressed and the little bugger just don`t feel as comfy as my 1895 cowboy 45-70 .
There is only 1/2 lb difference between the two and i`m real confident in the cowboy.
Sorry for the run around but gotta carry what feels good.

pitchy, the 45/70 is a favorite of mine and like a previous poster said, they do have a BFR in that caliber :) Stick to what feels best to you and the 45/70 is an all time classic !

16 rounds should be more than enough, I usually make due with ten in my Marlin 1894. The People's Republic of Hawai'i won't allow me to carry both a rifle and pistol at the same time in the field, I might hurt someone or myself. The Government here is so considerate always lookin' out for me. That being said in 36 years hunting with this gun I have never had to shoot a critter twice, each was "Thor's Hammer" dead with one shot. I did once have to shoot 2 boars from one herd (sounder) so if 11 came at me at once I'd be cursing the gubmint after round ten.

That is why I love all of my Marlin Cowboys , especially in .44! They just feel so comfy :)

With the 10 rounds in the Marlin, the 5 in my .44 flattop and 15 more on my gunbelt, I feel pretty darned good for a day spent in the woods.

Carried the same combo for years. I have a Marlin 1894 Cowboy and Vaquero in .44 that are very reassuring in the mountains.

Depending on where I am I also have a combo in .45 Colt (Uberti 1873 lever and Vaquero), in .357 ( Browning 1892 and Blackhawk) and of course in .22 (Browning BL-22 and Ruger Single Six) . I love combos in any caliber and .44 is one of the best. Having said that, your .44 Vaquero is a great combo with the 45-70, especially if that is what makes you feel the most comfortable.

I love my MArlin 45/70 too. I'll pick it with a mild load for woods walking over my 1894 .44 mag marlin even.

I have never really warmed up to the M94, but the '95 treats me well! (and everything else it treats quite poorly)

I have a 15" barreld Encore 45/70 -- i suppose that would be a nice "companion piece" if El Paso could make me a suitable holster

You need more than 16 rounds of the big ol' .44, and you are in a heap of trouble!
