I like it Perry, strap between hammer and firing pin is nice.
A lot of those military holsters can be altered to fit the need well, i made one up for my XD that i like.
This is it with a Taurus in that holster, the holster started out as a drop leg holster that i got at a Army surplus for five bucks.

@ Griff, I took it to see if that Para Ord 22 conv would fit. Never even made it to the Gun Store (that Guy keeps weird hours) but after thinking "I wasn't thinking".

The UM12 is the holster for the Beretta M9, though it'll work for a 1911 as well.
Used with the flap, it's known as the Suicide Special. An airman (now a sergeant, or out) needing to get to his in a hurry ended up ripping the entire holster off his belt attempting to draw under fire in 2002, which is why our entire career field transitioned to the Safariland 6004/6005 series (which is also far more secure, and quicker to draw from).
The thumb-break addition he's using makes it a survivable holster to use. They're inexpensive, and work reasonably well.
I chose to use a Tactical Tailor Modular Holster on my duty belt before the Safariland was authorized, since we were short of the thumb-break conversion for the UM12 a lot of the time (the flap was banned from use).

It's MOLLE for modern military gear, but you can use a MOLLE adapter to a regular belt if you like, there's other similar holsters out there. Mine is for the M9, and my 92FS lives in it.

Re: Colt commercial 1911/45
The holsters has been around for decades. Developed by John Bianchi, on his own dime, and first sales (while the military was evaluating it) were sold to civilians and the UM-84. The UM was actually made for the 1911, so the fact that one fits in the military version is no surprise.
The "holster" was actually just part of a system. Available were two shoulder holster setups, under arm and tanker, web belt, magazine holder, full flap, or as seen a safety strap. It was designed to be carried strong side, cross, and there were straps for making it a thigh holster.
There may have been other options I don't remember, but the idea of using a holster as part of a system allowing so many options seemed like a good idea. So, I bought the holster, belt, mag carrier, and several other bits and pieces. I have and still use it mostly as a full flap when I take it out to the desert.
Oh, I think there were two colors, Black (my choice) and OD green.

Re: Colt commercial 1911/45
It is a little short for the Colt. Barrel to trigger housing is diff but it holds it snug then with the thumb break it aint goin nowhere. Haven't tried My Taurus in it but I bet it would be perfect. As mentioned it is built for accessorizing.

Re: Colt commercial 1911/45
jeepnik is right, those are old in the military and were used with the 1911 quite often. I'm in Afghanistan now and that's what I was issued along with the M9 but we use it with the flap. On my previous deployment I bought the shoulder conversion for it but it was not very comfortable so I just bit the bullet and bought the Blackhawk drop leg rig, it was $100 but well worth it, still going strong this deployment after 24/7 use, they take a beating out here. The UM holster is actually pertty good and I would say about a third of the guys out here use them, they carry it on the strong side hip while inside the wire, when outside then it goes on the required vest. I worked with some SEALs that used it for their Sig P226 and it fit well, it carries a polymer cleaning rod with a jag in a rail on the front of it. I would recommend it for most large frame autos.
We celebrated the Marine Corps' 237th birthday today so the 1 MEF (FWD) Major General came to my FOB to say a few words, he was carrying a beat up Sprinfield Armory 1911 in a Blackhawk rig. The MarSOC guys carry 1911s but this is the first time I see one in country.
