Newer manufacture tang safety solid frame standard grade models will run between $1000.00 to $1300.00 depending upon condition, box, etc. The various auction sites could provide you with more info. You did not ask but I picked up a new DLX take down for $1800.00 out the door. They are not cheap. 1886.

I'm seeing the Brownings still bringing that much, too. I had a Browning oct 86 here on consignment about two years ago. The book showed it at $900 but it sold for $1200. I saw a used high grade go for over $1800 on Auction Arms recently.

I bought my standard B-86 rifle last fall, locally, with an MVA vernier and front globe for $1650 OTD, with an action/trigger job. (my avatar pic)

I just today saw a used one at the same shop for $850, plus docs and tax. It had a lot of hunting marks on it but the action and bore looked pristine. That is still a steal, IMO, but I don't need two.

Most of the standard rifles I see on internet auctions are about $1200 +/- for used (but excellent condition) with no box, and about $1500 to $1600 NIB. I've seen several High grades go well over $2k, depending on wood.

I gave 1200 recently for a Browning High Grade SRC. It was like new in the box, I don't think it was fired, but it doesn't matter, as I have since had it drilled and tapped for a receiver sight and of course I have fired it.

Just another thought for what it is worth but you might start with the SRC. These are neat, handy, little rifles that can be had for about $1000.00. I really like the look and off hand shooting qualities of the long, octagon barreled 86s but that SRC will really grow on you. The recently manufactured guns seem to be readily available( as long as one has the green) but the non safetied SRC has not been made for 20 odd years. LNIB samples can be found and are still bargains for some strange reason. I'll wager others will probably chime in and give their thumbs up to the SRC and Hobie will most likely be among the first. Warning, your pursuit of the 86 will become habit forming. I started about 1 year ago and 5 samples later the itch is as strong as ever. Regards. 1886.

Yes, the Browning SRC is about my favorite, because it's weight and length are about right for great handling, It will hold 8 rounds, fully loaded, and just heavy enough that recoil is pretty mild. And the carbine buttplate is more confortable IMHO then the cresent buttplate found on some of the others. Of course the shotgun buttplate is really nice on some of the later models like the Winchester Extra Lightweight, but with it you also have to contend with the lawyered up rebounding hammer and tang safety, and it still seems to kick harder then the Browning SRC, but I recond recoil is a subjective thing, and others might not agree.

At anyrate, I have owned a couple of 86's and several Marlin 45/70's and also a couple of single shots, and I like my Browning SRC better then all of the rest, that I have owned, in just about every way.

I would love a SRC as well. I've been drooling over this redone one for a while. It's been relisted many times and if the price keeps going down, well.....

You guys are right on the money about the SRCs... (I had to chime in after 1886 called me on it!) Mine is a pleasure to shoot and accurate to boot. I bought it from a fine member of this forum at what was close to top dollar at the time (it was worth it) but it has appreciated and I couldn't replace it for that much now. Around here, I still see NIB examples at shows but they are now asking $1100-1200 and the thought of a second at that price isn't beyond imagination. They are superb working guns.

Brian Pearce and his friends must agree as they've been prominently mentioned in several articles in Rifle and Handloader.

I'm going to let you know right now that if I see that gun again and have close to that much money I'm buying it. So, if you want it you'd best be getting it.

The Browning 1886 SRC is one of the best guns ever made. The rifle version weighs a ton yet some prefer it. Not me by a long shot!

To me the SRC has it all and I mean ALL !

Ok I'll chime in dittos on the B-SRC, I love fondling mine...

However, I shot Blaine's Winchester XtraLight and I gotta tell you that's a fine rifle, and I didn't notice any problems with the rebounding hammer. We were hitting steel at about 150 yards no problem. It'll do.

Well someone here should get it. I just bought a 33 TD so I'm out of the market for a while. It sure would be nice to see it go to a "family" member.

I feel like a man from back in the last millinea reading your posts tonight about the Browning 86's. I have both Rifle and SRC in Lo Grades. Paid 479.00 in 1986 for the long gun, and in 1990 or 91 I think it was, paid 675.00 for the SRC. Both NIB, SRC still unfired, gotta shoot it soon. The rifle length shoots like a dream. Times change though, but that money was worth more back in those years.

Thanks a lot - now I'm convinced that I have to have a Browning 1886!
Anyone know of a standard grade 26in octagon model for sale? The SRC's look neat but I would use the rifle for lever action silhouette, not hunting.

I have both the Browning 1886 rifle and the SRC. Bought both back when they first came out. The SRC is hands down my go to favorite. :)

I wish you guys would stop putting up that pic of that redone SRC. Keeps me awake!

I got it :D :D :D :D
I picked it up on Saturday. I traded my Browning 1886 rifle, then two months on layaway to pay the balance, then the Kalifornia wait, etc....
Now I'm staring at her. She's MAGNIFICENT.

I have no idea what I'll feed it, but I can't wait to figure it out. It may be a while, though as work and family are extremely busy at the moment.

I couldn't be happier - this rifle is a sight to behold, and I think it might surpass my beloved 71s as my favorite levergun  :!:

Chad, congratulations. Now I got to keep reminding myself of the old command, 'Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's SRC.' :D

I don't know yet. It looks brand new, but I'll have to take it off to see the codes. I'll try to look in my Stroeble sight book too. It has the quick release button like a Lyman, except on the front, and the knobs are slotted for a coin.

So let us know when you find out. If that purty rifle can be d't'd for sight, I guess I could get over having my High grade so handled.

It is a Redfield No. 80 Series, code F, with coin slotted hunter knobs, making it officially a Redfield No. 80FH, mfg from 1957 to 1964.
