Glad everybody here weathered Sandy without a scratch. Others still aren't quite so fortunate and I don't suspect their lives will be normal for a good long time.
'It's like the Wild West': Lawlessness and fear take over the outer boroughs as they enter sixth day without power
Residents claim they are the 'forgotten victims' of Sandy
Also say that lack of power and law enforcement means more looting and violent crime
Those in stricken areas stockpiling weapons like kitchen knives, machetes, and bats to protect themselves
Coney Island residents say they are forced to 'scavenge for food like animals'
Power unlikely to be returned to Brooklyn, Queen's and Staten Island until sometime next week

" kitchen knives, machetes, and bats" .... better than nothing, but it sounds like some people didn't put too much thought into home defence prior to this.

Having spent my formative years in Florida; l'm a little befuddled by the whole thing.
It's not like it was a surprise that a hurricane was coming for a visit. If you are determined to stay after your told to get out of Dodge wouldn't you have food, water, gas and guns at the ready? The stupidity of people never fails to amaze me.

Not when they expect government to handle everything. They probably expected Obama to drive down their street handing out hot meals.

Yes -- that had to be the most accurately forecast storm on record, not only where it would hit, when it would hit, but also how damaging it could be. And it is the government's fault that these folks are cold and hungry a mere 6 days after it hit?

I'm heading there to deal with it myself, but i am glad i am working with USAA people (pre-dominately ex military and dependants who know how to keep a clear head in a lot of cases --- 4 or 5 feet of water in your home will test many people's resolve though, to be sure)
Since flood claims are under-written by FEMA , maybe i can try out the 'ol "I'm from the government , and i'm here to help!" line
Move all the old furniture, pictures, clothes and anything else you'd like to be rid of to the ground floor or basement.
Move all the good stuff you want to keep upstairs. Get a second refrigerator upstairs. A Coleman camp stove. A kerosene heater.
Food and water. Survival stuff, guns and ammo etc.
Get a generator and enough gas to last a while.
Get a sump pump you can run with the generator.
After the flooding subsides:
Pump out the basement, then photograph all the flood damage.
File a damage claim with FEMA, Post a "Flood Sale" on Craigs List or a "Free For All" on Freecycle.
Collect your damage check from the gooberment, rent a Ryder truk, pack your good stuff in it and book it for someplace nicer.
But basically, to hell with the government. If people would just use some common sense they could do for themselves faster, better, and more efficiently than all the gooberment bureaucracies combined.

A few residents shrugged off the hardship, acknowledging that they had been told to evacuate and now were paying the price.
“It’s just an inconvenience. Half the world does not have electricity,” said Ralph Lopez, 73, as he shuffled slowly along the sidewalk outside the Red Hook Houses with his plump Chihuahua, Pepe. “I grew up in a cold-water flat with no heat at all. And this is just for a week. So boohoo.”

Good for 73 year old Mr. Lopez, and any others just like him!
"If a man does away with his traditional way of living and throws away his good customs, he had better first make certain that he has something of value to replace them." - Basuto proverb.
If the theft happens within folk's homes and they are home that is home invasion. In a heartbeat that can turn to murder and rape. It has happened far to often to be anything but a bonafide life threatening situation. Professional thieves and felons don't like leaving accidental witness' behind. I might be off base but I'll let the LEOs let us know if I am. Defending innocent lives is moral and legal if it is my family or my neighbours family. Not doing it is immoral and cowardly. CNN has footage of a vicious beating some innocent person took from a gang of roving punks after Sandy.
I had to delete the last paragraph I wrote. I've calmed down a bit now. But not much.
In my state it is not illegal to defend yourself against someone in your home if you feel threatened.
As to the immoral reference I have no qualms about plugging some thug that's in my home
to steal the things that I have to keep my family safe and healthy during an emergency.
If someone crosses my threshold with intent to do harm or take from my family he or she looses all
rights to be upright and threatening!

2571(nothing personal) but if I find you in my house uninvited it will be neither illegal or immoral. I like my wife and kids to much to guess someone's intentions.

Having stupid laws that restrict people from defending themselves is the very thing that causes these thugs to be bold enough to do the things they do to start with.
A man should have the right to defend life and property with deadly force if needed. I just can't understand how these crying whining do-gooder liberals ever got such a foothold in our country.

I guess since your from Detroit you wouldn't understand defend you self and your family and property. It's all about cars and peace and love huh. God said let he who has no sword sell his clothes and buy one to defend. You break into my home and the last thing you will here is a loud bang. And yes it's legall and moral to defend.

Until TN vs Garner any fleeing felon could be shot. The Garner decision turned hundreds of years of law upside down and gave the advantage to the criminal. We have never really recovered from that turning of the table as a society. Now we don't own our property. We just possess it until someone wants to take it away.
Many people don't have insurance to replace things. If I make $15 an hour and you steal my car you have stolen a lot of hours of my life. I am not really willing to give that to someone. Defense of property is a basic right that has been almost taken away. That is immoral.
Garner v TN changed the law to reflect current understanding of morality. You don't kill somebody to protect physical property. Garner has been the law of the land for almost 30 years, like it or not.
Prior posts are attempting to justify immorality by claiming lethal force was used to defend a person rather than mere personalty.
Pretty offensive to fellow man and the law.
Don't care you make $15 per hour. You don't take life for stealing property which can be repaced.
Citing bible to permit that fraud is both un-Christian and offensive to the Almighty.
2571 You sir are the one who is offensive at the thought of it being illegal and immoral and biblically speaking you should read it more befor you spout off about it being offensive. And yes it is legall to use deadly force for theft in the night time here in Texas. And if someone breaks into my home it's more offensive to be a coward and do nothing to protect my family myself and my property.

And most of us have a old gun we use for a "drop gun" for such a purpose. My drop is a very old 25 pocket pistol, very untraceable to be exact.
Well I can see by the way my last post was edited which contained nothin foul. But what i spoke of seems offensive to this site which offens me so I will not be back.
