Only the Shadow knows....
Or Black Shadow....
Well, the local pawn shop had a nice Win M94 Black Shadow chambered in 44 Mag on the rack - $399.
I waited and did the usual detective work and found out that the relatively few of these were made and that they are worth quite a bit more than $400 in VG condition.
So..... I bought it. It was definately in Excellent condition - bore is pristine, no rust no scars, etc. - just a little dirty.
Here it is:
Alls I've done so far is swab the bore and lube it a little. Checked feeding with a dummy round - fine.
Plan on checking the accuracy with some exisitng handloads this weekend.
I like it - it reminds me of the old Model 65, only with a short barrel. And the front swivel is cool too.

What a steal!!
I had one of those in .444 Marlin. What a brute, sold it after I found out how much it was worth!
Have fun, betting the .44 Mag is much more pleasant to shoot! Pretty rare too.

SO the Shadow's name was Lamont Cranston?
Re: Only the Shadow knows....
What a good score. I wonder what the twist rate is and wonder if it will feed the 405gr hard cast I shoot in my revolver. I'd be glad to send you one if you'd like to check it out. That would give you trapdoor or better downrange results in a very handy rifle.O.S.O.K. wrote:Or Black Shadow....

I'm pretty happy with 300 gr boolits at 1600 fps, but I bet I could push those 405's to at least 1200...

Re: Only the Shadow knows....
Yes Sir. It's a 94AE
It's marked "Winchester MODEL 94AE CAL. 44 REM. MAG.
And Grizz - thanks brother! I will be sure and report back on the 405 boolit performance - at least at the range.
I bet one of those tooling along at 1300 fps would be a hammer on anything we have to hunt down here or up in AK.
Oh, and I've got a question, the Win data on the home page ends at 1982... This is probably a 90's production gun - but if anybody can help tell me what year, I'd appreciate it - I'm just curious = serial number is 6351XXX
Thanks!

Re: Only the Shadow knows....
I had a crystal set too
Made it from a kit. I remember being amazed that it worked so well.
But I'm a little too young to have listed to the original radio shows - TV had taken over and I was watchin B&W shows.

All I know is that factory loads in my '69 mdl 94 carbine in .44Mag kicked MUCH harder than any .30-30 in the same model!

Re: Only the Shadow knows....
me too Pete. I had a radio beside my bed and had to be careful under the covers with it. it had TUBES in it and it GLOWED and got HOT. Imagine that. Had to be careful not to set the sheets on fire!! There were NO transisters inside that radio. Listened to great shows that would not embarrass anyone, unless straight upsets them. The good old days.Pete44ru wrote:Stan in SC wrote:LAMONT Cranston not Lamar. What was his girl friend's name?

Re: Only the Shadow knows....
Thanks - I just tried the old tape on cleaning rod and tight patch method and it looks like mine is 1:38"... The tape went just a bit over 1/2 way around for the length of the barrel - that's if the patch was staying true to the rifling...

Re: Only the Shadow knows....
Range Report:
Fired three, three round salvos at 50 yards. Sat behind my tractor's grater blade and used it as a rest. I was not as rock steady as shooting off of a set of bags from a bench, but it was good enough to give me an idea of sighting and accuracy with the chosen load.
Here's the target:
First three went to the lower left. Adjusted sights up one click and drifted the rear sight to the right - shot the second three which landed too far right but about good for elevation. Then drifted the rear sight back left towards my witness mark and shot the last three which landed spot on - good enough considering the shooter's eyes and rest... The center white circle is 1" in circumfrence BTW.
Here's the load that I was shooting:
That's a 310 grain cast boolit from a Lee mold - gas check. Used Lee Liq Alox lube - wheel weights with a little tin and sized .431".
No leading in the bore at all - looks clean accept for a bit of powder fouling.
I'm pretty happy with this. There's plenty of "up" adjustment left in the rear sight as it's the typical Winchester version with the screw adjustable blade on the click adjustable ramp. In spite of my 51 year old eyes, the sights looked fine. I was thinking of puting a Skinner sight on this one but I'll probably leave it as-is given this experience...
I'll be testing it at 100 and longer ranges with other loads after hunting season. For now, I know it's good to go for most of the hunting on my land if I choose to use it this year
