Some Info On Zippo Lighters

I have not smoked for about 16-17 years, but, I've always had a Zippo...instant fire in most weather conditions. So...I always kept a spare flint or three under the first layer of cotton inside it for future use if needed......Flash forward a bunch of years, the flint has broken down in there from the lighter fluid, or something, so from now on, the extra flints are not kept inside the lighter.....Gotta keep those Zippos ready to fire up all the time.

Glad I'm not the only one who still carries a Zippo. And I've never been a smoker, err cigarette smoker. Like most other airdales I picked up my first one in basic to burn off errant threads. But, it soon became apparent that many smokers didn't have a "light", including my parents. So I got into the habit of carrying it.

I started a small accumlation a few years back, but nothing serious. Most have never been lit and just sit on the shelf, but I like to look at them.

My dad carried a Zippo. Thinking about the sound they make brings back memories. I still have my grandfather's Zippo that he carried. It has his name engraved on one side and the company seal from the Glidden Paint Co. on the other side. I'm sure it was given to him by the company rep. He was the car boss for the Virginian R.R. in Princeton, WV and they wanted his business. He died in 1963 so there's no telling how old the lighter is.

Rusty, give this website a whirl. Let us know if you can figure out the manufacture date. I've got one from '53, and another from '63. The rest of my meager collection are more modern 90's and newer versions.

All I remember about a Zippo is that if You got them too full You suffered with that burning spot on Your leg for a bit "ouch". And trying to learn all the different ways to light one.

I did too.....it seems, though, after about 17 years they crumble.....I would go thru a flint every month or so when I smoked.

Blaine, you old skin-flint, now that you've sparked my interest, I think I'll fuel the debate. Flints are cheap, just buy some new ones! Nothing to flip your lid about....Sorry I got all fired up, I'll zippo my lip before I get flamed!

Just a little tid bit from a COB, but if you disassemble your dead disposable lighters, you will find a good flint left most of the time that will fit your Zippo. I have lots of them as well as the little springs. I just need to find a use for the springs.

I found a NOS Dunhill trench lighter on ebay, and that is my fluid/camping lighter, and also my pipe lighter.
Also have an old Marble's match tin.

Been to the Zippo factory several times, they are combined with the Case knife brand in Bradford, PA. Very interesting display of lighters they replaced. Included one with an 8MM German bullet stuck in it from WWII. Last time I was there, the family took that particular lighter back but the display was there.

Recommend a visit if you are in the area.

I love them little springs, use them all the time. Tang sight detent spring on my Hawkin broke, guess whats in it. Also fix the hooks we use on trailer breakaways with them.

I've been through there half a dozen times. Always something new. I love the letters on the walls from Chester Nimitz, Admiral King, General Eisenhower, etc.

Always buy something new, usually a Case knife but have picked up a couple Zippos.

I carried one all thorough college. Don't smoke but it seemed to me that the pretty girls never had a light!

They work pretty good for toasting the backside of leaches. Makes them let right go.

This may not be a news flash, but I'd let go of pert near anything I was latched onto as well if someone toasted my posterior with a lighter...

This thread reminds me of my old zippo I used to have (and lost) in the military. A brass venetian type. But if you would really like to lust after some zippos way out of your price range, hit this place up. Dangit, my budget seriously isn't enough to justify these, but they're sexy as hell.

Great American company, Zippo. Years ago found an old Zippo in a drawer with a broken hinge. Sent it in. They fixed it, also put in a whole new insert/guts, and also sent fluid and flints back with it. No charge, outstanding.
