OT-H&R Rifles?Shotguns
I noted in some posts where members had purchased the H&R rifle as kind of a stow away for survival purposes.
On the new guns: Are most of the stocks and frame the same size?
Do you know if a .308 barrel will interchange with a 30-06 barrel on the same receiver. How about a 12 ga. on the same receiver?
It seems for sake of economy, it would seem H&R would have no more than 2 or 3 different receivers. I know that a person can buy the rifle/shotgun combo, but is that a special receiver?
Thanks
JR

if you contact NEF they will give you directions on sending them your receiver. they will fit a barrel and forearm to it and ship it back. no problems. their phone number is 978-630-8220
This should do it. A few of us with Handis hang out here.

They have four catagories of frames onto which a barrel would be mounted.
1.Centerfire
2.Rimfire
3.Shotgun
4.Too old to add barrels for
If you are going to buy a H&R firearm for the first time I would suggest a
centerfire set up. That way you can send it back to them to have either a
centerfire barrel or shotgun barrel put on. As many as you want.
If you buy a shotgun frame YOU CAN ONLY HAVE A SHOTGUN BARREL PUT ON IT.
The rimfires firing pin is in a different location so they are rimfire only.
When adding barrels to an H&R firearms they MUST be sent back to the factory.
Here is the link to their extra barrel accessorie page.
When I say they must be sent in it is for the initial fitting and can be swapped
out at home any time you want and it's quite easy.
http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.aspx
Browse it and get an idea of what it's all about.
As an option, take a look at Thompson Center Arms. They cost more, but
fit and finish is ALLOT better.
Also, you don't have to send your receiver in to fit barrels. Just buy one
from any number of sites or local gunshops and put em right on.
Not as easy to switch barrels either but not difficult either.

Not always....I've bought used barrels and put them on my receivers many times.
The reason I made my first post, is that the matter is pretty complicated. While there are many generalizations, there are few hard and fast rules.

I've successfully interchanged barrels, too - without any help from the factory.
You need to start with the stronger C.F. rifle frame.
Most barrels will fit it, except 10ga shot. The R.F. barrels will also fit it, but you're S.O.L., on a firing pin solution for them.
If your Handi is labeled: SB-1, or is a muzzleloader, fahgeaboutit.

I've had three H&R's, a 22 mag, .243 ultralight, and what I still have now, my
12 gauge with and extra 28 gauge barrel.
I had the 22 mag for two years. It didn't care for a bull barrel on a rimfire, and could never find anything that would shoot well
in it.
The ultralight for less time, but while I had it I tried to put the 12&28 barrels
on it. They didn't lock up tight so there was no way I was gonna shoot 'em.
That's about the extent of my "hands on" knowledge, but if I might add if you
put another barrel on an H&R and it doesn't absolutely lock up tight I wouldn't
pull the trigger.
My local shop has a sb45-70 with the schnabel type fore end that I like the
looks of. As soon as I get back to work it's coming home with me.

Yep but they are dropping the huntsman IIRC.Andrew wrote:Jeeps wrote: If you buy a shotgun frame YOU CAN ONLY HAVE A SHOTGUN BARREL PUT ON IT.

ROFL I know I put my foot in my mouth on that one. But the point was generally to get a centerfire first so you wont have to worry about what canJReed wrote:Yep but they are dropping the huntsman IIRC.Andrew wrote:Jeeps wrote: If you buy a shotgun frame YOU CAN ONLY HAVE A SHOTGUN BARREL PUT ON IT.

or can't go on next.
Prolly didn't consider the muzzleloader cuz when the time comes for me to get
one my Contender is ready and waiting.
Just for the heck of it, how many folks have been able to put a centerfire
barrel onto another receiver and have it work safely with no problems without
having to send it in for some fitting?

From what I have heard is it may not fit right but there are ways to get it to fit. One way to check to see if the swap will work is swap the barrles between the frames if they fit on each others frames then you are golden.
But with the accessory program it is just as easy to send in your frame and have NEF fit it for you.

If they say to send it in, personally I would. I know what they are supposedJReed wrote:Jeeps

to "feel" like when they lock up. Being a single shot it's just that much closer
to my face. Wanting the 45-70 I talked about earlier I would send it in for a
30-06 and a Hornet barrel also.
If my neighbor had a H&R 30-06 barrel that felt good "to me" I don't think I
would want to pull the trigger without the ok of a gunsmith or H&R themselves. I'm just don't trust "me" as much as I do "them".

To further complicate matters NEF now sells SB1 framed combo sets that include a .357 or .44 Magnum barrel and a rifled shotgun barrel. The catalog states that no other rifle barrels can be fitted to these frames.
The answer is complicated.

OK I'll muddy the waters even more. Get this, they also sell a combo that is a shotgun barrel along with a rimfire barrel. They say they won't fit a rimfire barrel to a centerfire frame but they sell them that way.
The trick is, on their rimfire, the chamber is off set so the firing pin will hit in the right place.
