What lever for this hog...?

Post by alnitak »

Wondering if my .30-30 or .44mag will be enough for these beasts in Florida!?!

This 1,800 pound boar was killed in King's Point, Sun City Center , FL. They call them Piney Wood Rooter's.
There was a documentary on about a month ago about these pigs growing up rapidly in the US.
Evidently they're all over Georgia , Alabama , Arkansas , Missouri , Florida and other states.

Can't tell the real size of the hog because of the camera trick used to take the pictures. Hog is set far in front of man and photographer stands way back and uses telephoto to compress the apparent distances. Look at the difference in leaf sizes under the hog and next to the man/men.

I hate it when the photographers use that kind of trickery. It ruins what might be a good story.

And alnitak, the 30-30 and 44 mag is enough for hogs in FL. You just gotta read my sig line and hunt accordingly. ;)

Not new. I've seen the photos before.

The last time I saw them (maybe 2 years ago) that hog was killed in some far away exotic land like Turkey, but not in Florida.

It's not as big as they tried to make it look, but it's still a darned big hog.

Even a hog of that size will fall to a .30-30 right behind the ear.

:)

Thought the pic looked familiar...here's additional info turned up...

"According to a French hunting magazine published in 2005, the boar was shot in July 2005 in Turkey by hunters on an expedition hosted by Nature Tours.

A .300-caliber rifle was used to bring the beast down – the largest reported boar in Turkey, weighing around 781 pounds – the magazine reported.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Dean Fitzpatrick said wild boars in Montgomery County are considerably smaller, and pork of that magnitude would have to be brought home from several animals."

That's for sure. And a very good job on the photography, especially on shot #2, with both the hog and the men in sharp focus.

That camera trick works even on the tiniest of piggies, just ask 86er.

Same pig

I've dropped 300+ pound pigs with one shot from my 44 mag using 240 grain JSP. If in doubt go with 300 grain hardcast Keith type.
My neighbor buddy shot a 400 pound boar with his 30-30 using 170 JSPs, took 3 rounds to drop him but he dropped.
I'm happy with my 44 mag as my pig rifle.

The subject hog was killed in Turkey by a client that booked a hunt with Nature Tours on 2005. Via the web it has been reported as killed in every different State of the Union at one time or the other.

Might as well, how did you get it up and out of the canyon?

Actually, he rode it up out of the canyon, then shot it. . . :D

With that camera angle, I'd say you might be able to get that job done with a 39a. You could make a squirrel look as big as my S-10 like that.

I think a .22 mag right behind the ear would do nicely. :D

As luck would have it I live about 28 miles from Sun City Center. King's Point is a condo complex there .

Photographs do lie! Also over the years I've noticed folks usually over estimate the weight of hogs. My stand is in the very top LH corner of this photo. The distance from the stand to the hog is only about 50 yards. The hog in the photo weighed 210 pounds. :D

Proposed Rule Amendment -

"A ruler showing a large or bold typeface or an alternative calibrated measurement device (approved by NIST) must be placed in proximity to animal carcasses in any hunting photo where game is displayed."
