Her first salmon
Here's a shot of my daughter with her first pink salmon, caught on a fly tied by her proud papa near the mouth of the Oyster River on Vancouver Island, B.C. This trip was part of her college grad present. Boy is she happy, and so was I ...

Thanks guys. Blaine, I 'd love to get her out on the Rogue, but she is just starting her Ph.D. at Iowa State, and Ames is a little beyond commute distance to Oregon ...

Blaine, it might be ocean conditions or feed stocks, but we are seeing better runs, and we have more summer steelies at the hatchery than since the year 2,000 for this time of summer.

Congratulations on a very special time for your family.
My daughters graduation trip was a Montana elk hunt; many great memories come from these times.

Ditto what Ji said. Photos like that one sort of rub off on you, lifts your spirit.

Re: Her first salmon
Classic! A beautiful fish, caught in a gorgeous setting, on a fly rod with a fly tied by yourself, and all within the context of a memory-making, father-daughter time together. At times like that, life can hardly get better.

Re: Her first salmon
Down my way it ain't even a Pink/Humpy year... I think... Been a while since I throw'd some flies at em.
What fly was it?
Looks like around here the Chinook/King season will be better than most in recent times. Won't take em on a fly though. Hard to beat the excitement of hauling in a Coho/Silver on a surface fished streamer... May have already missed them in the Salt. Been seeing them hammering Herring whilst out paddling my Canoe fetching my crab pots.
Inspiring picture. Have to check the regs and maybe throw the #7 in the Canoe next time out.

Re: Her first salmon
Whit: It would have been the simple pink handlebar in the upper right of this photo that caught the vast majority of our pinks. I know the runs are bigger in odd numbered years, so I hope to go back in 2013.

Thanks Bill, I will be tying a few of those. Is that about a size 4 hook?
