Holy "Stuff", you've been living right
I paid that for a M88 in .284 not near as nice looking
Personally, I'm going to mount a VXIII, 1.5x5, 30mm tuba, lit reticle on mine, hopefully in time for hunting this fall. A large scope don't seem right on those.

Sweet find
Redfield makes decent glass at a good price ($150-200 ) --- they are not the quality of the higher end LEupold's but compare very favorably to their Riflemen and VX-2 series -- basically good for 99.5% of the scenarios anyone would reasonably encounter

I can't agree more with the Redfield...A classic scope for a classic rifle. I have used Nikon recently on a couple rifles and I think they are the best for the money, but Redfield is a subsidiary of Leupold...so you can't go wrong! Absolutely lovely rifle! I had a post-64 in .308 and it was a tackdriver with my handloasds!!!!!!

WOW!! Very nice Steve. I can't remember ever seeing an 88 with that nice of a figure in the wood. I like it just the way that it is; iron sights, hooded front. You are going to shoot it, right?
Re: New Levergun Followed Me Home
Well....... Since it kinda looks like a Ruger 96 - I THINK I LIKE IT...!
It begs for either a Redfield 'vintage' scope or a Lyman receiver sight.

Congrats on that. Mine shoots Federal 150s to about 1/2". Win 180s over 6". They can be very sccurate but also picky about bullets. Mine has a Leupold 4x Bueller mountd.

Very nice find you got & the shape its in is rare
My uncle gave me one a year ago that was made in 65, he bought it new & fired it 6 times, came with 2 xtra mags
and 34 rounds of rem 180 gr RN, I put a old weaver 2x7 on it to keep it all vintage & it shoots great
Last year I had to shoot a deer with it & then called my uncle, he was well pleased

Wow! That was a lucky find!
Re: New Levergun Followed Me Home
I think with a find like that I would want to obtain a scope from the same time period to hang it from.... was B&L making the Balvar series at that point in time? Always really liked those wonky adjustable mounts they made for them.....

Yes, great find Steve! A friend has a Pre-64 for sale at a LGS/under consignment I'm helping honcho the sale of. Not as nice as yours, mechanically very serviceable, but we noticed (amazingly had one unnoticed) the stock's got a diagonal crack from receiver to triggerguard-area. One of those - "could go five years of hunting (ab)use or be a problem tomorrow" things. Anyway, I've been in the same zone, Steve, admiring the '88's basic goodness for many years, and actually helped him find this one (masochist that I am). Stock notwithstanding, he is still not giving it away, but I don't recall what we're asking of late. (PM me if interested and I'll kick it into gear again). Oh yes, .308 also. I should buy it and re-stock it myself, such has been my admiration of the thing but funds for such are low, as they always are when interesting things come by - Aint that the way?!

What Damien said: WOW !! Gorgeous wood. Oh yeah, there's a Winchester 88 attached too ! Bonus !!

Re: New Levergun Followed Me Home
I took your suggestion and looked at Redfield's Revolution scopes. I found a Revolution 3-9x40 with Accu-Range reticle as well as a Redfield mount and 1" rings on special at Midway USA. This setup should be just the ticket for my uses while still keeping the classic look intact.

Wow!!! I have NEVER seen a nicer 88! My goodness that's a LOVELY rifle.
While you can't go wrong with the Redfield, do bear in mind that they're flat finished and perhaps a slightly more glossy finish like that on a Leupold would look better on that rifle.
Also, Weaver still makes their classic steel 4x scope! Now THAT would look right at home on that rifle.

Re: New Levergun Followed Me Home
Very good score!
Always wanted a Model 88 and a Model 100 in .358 Winchester. But if I could find a nice Savage 99 in .358, I think I would be satisfied.
Anyway you did really well and I hope it shoots to your expectations.

Re: New Levergun Followed Me Home
Thanks but I looked at the Leupold, Burris, and Bushnell scopes and in this price range and classic style, all 3-9x40 scopes have a mat finish. Further, I want an American made scope and a classic set of Redfield mount, rings, and scope appeals to me. As to the Weaver 4x suggestion, with almost 65 year old eyes (Nov. 8th) a standard 4x scope is not in the cards. I'd like to find a decent gloss one but I'm thinking I could always wax and polish the mat to get it a bit closer in look.olyinaz wrote:Wow!!! I have NEVER seen a nicer 88! Thats a beauty, worth about 3 to 4X what you paid
And your wrong about two things. The Winchester buttpad is original and they ARE tackdrivers. The ones I've HAD shot no worse than any out-of-the-box boltgun.
I'll send my son right over to double your money.
