The Hydraulic water ram revisited.

Post by Pitchy »

A while back i posted about these and said when i ge[*] time i`d set up one to show how they work.
I love these pumps, they are alive and breath 8)
The blue water tank would be the water supply wether it be a spring, creek, lake what ever as long as the pump is down hill with at least a three foot drop.
The water hose coming from the pump is the return line and can go in any direction to a location of your choice like a water tank by your cabin. If you ran a over flow pipe from your tank back to the supply location you would have continuous cold water in your tank.
The first picture is a video, click on it vto watch, the rest are pictures.
Hope you enjoy watching it run as much as i did setting it up. :)

I was thinking about a yard water feature, but it looks like you lose a little bit on each stroke. I forgot about the "Nothing For Free" clause.
That's really cool, though!!! You're amazing!!

Neat set up. I have seen those but never running. I quess the lower you are from your supply the greater the pressure. What kind of pressure is it capable of generating?

I forgot all the specs on them but they will pump a long ways and build up usable pressure.

Pitchy's pump will go vertical a couple hundred feet. Flow is reduced. Mine will theoretically pump the same, however my supply flow is so low, I think I would run out of flow before it reached that high. They will run 100 psi, so figure the water column weight and that's where the 200' comes in. I need to figure out a better inlet screen as mine is too fine and plugs with pluff.

Man i`m not sure, pretty old i`m sure, this one at a resort, they had a spring that fed it and it pumped water up too a water tower.

Cool Tycer, thanks for the specs, yep they work good when ya get them set right. This one has a 1 inch outlet so it would pump a lot of water.

Thats really slick! so if that pump was set up for max flow, how many gallons per min. could it pump?
I dont no a thing bout it

IIRC, one that size can pump a max of 5000 gallons a day, so ~3.5 GPM

A simple explanation on how they work, the water flows down the long supply pipe and goes right on through and out the valve that is clattering and dumping water out.
When the water gets going to a certain speed which is controlled by a spring above the valve it slams the valve closed. At that point the water is forced up through a hole in the air chamber where it compresses the air.
There is a leather flap over the hole that acts as a check valve so the water can`t go back.
There`s another hole beside that hole that is the only place the water can go and that`s the line that takes the water to where ya want it.
After that happens the pressure drops and the valve opens and the cycle repeats itself.
The more weight in water ya have in the supply pipe the further it will pump, that`s the heart of the pump.

Dear Pitchy, just one question, is it supposed to leak at that flange? God Bless.

Pitchy, that's a lovely pump.
These guys offer several models, and their river pumps are pretty swell too. I thought about building an irrigation cistern and using one of these, but didn't get around to it.

Well heck yes, wouldn`t be normal if something didn`t leak

Bill, yep those Rife rams are cool, i built a miniture one once.
If i had a place to get some use out of one of these pumps i`d have a rife.
Those river pumps are cool too.

Still think those things are cool! I'd like to rig one up at my cabin.

Went out and did a flow check, it`s pumping 3 GPM.
Drop is just three foot, pump is 30 feet away.
