Favorite 30-30 powder?
Please tell me what you like and is most accurate for you. Lead, jacketed and copper plated bullets possible. What I hate is trying a powder and not liking it/not getting good accuracy, and then I have to shoot it up. Kind of like taking medicine. I'm not there to kick up dust.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
I`ve only tried one powder so far 4198, but it seems to work real good, fills the case pretty full and is accurate.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
I like RL15 for best velocity and accuracy in the rifles I have shot it in. Win 748 is another good one, along with 4198.

IMR4895 which is a good powder for quite a few calibers.
Reloader7 is another.

Winchester 748. I first tried it in the mid 70s and have been using it ever since.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
I started off using 748 but later switched to Varget. It gives very good accuracy with the Sierra Pro Hunter 170. Either powder works well.
Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
4895 has given me excellent accuracy. Very consistant.

Jacketed bullets 748,rl15 and ramshot biggame have all worked rather well.
Cast bullets 5744 and 4198 and unique.

IMR 3031 works best for me and my gun
Varget is ok, as well as RL7
I have no personal experience with it, but I've heard Trail Boss is good for a real light plinking load. Fills the case and keeps the recoil very light....good for kids and cowboy action shooting

I load 748 in 30-30 and am very satisfied with it.

LVR (compressed load and firm crimp) for a full-power jacketed hunting load; RL-7 for plinking load with 110 grain bullets; 4759 for cast bulllets.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
I have settled on IMR30-31 since it give me the best accuracy. not as fast as some of the others, but I can't beat the accuracy in my Marlin of in PillHer's Marlin.

I have a couple of eight pound jugs of WC846. Military surpluss powder, and is pretty close to BLC 2 in burn rate.. works well in the 30-30 and several others.. 308 , 223 to name a couple..
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

Varget for jacketed bullets.
2400 or 4198 for cast. ( both do very well for cast bullets)

See what Hobbie p[osted.
I shoot .30 calibre Berry copper plated lead bullets and the velocity must not exceed 1700 FPS. Found that SR4759 works best with Berry bullets.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
I've used RL-7, Unique, and 2400, but I've had the best results with IMR4064.

Never tried anything but 4895, but it does well enough I stopped looking. 170 grain gas-check cast lead bullets.

Re: Favorite 30-30 powder?
Thanks, I am going to try 748, as I've tried most of the others. I see 748 is about the slowest burning, maybe that will do the trick.
I want to be able to load it down a little, to use with Oregon Trail lead and possibly Berry-type copper coated bullets. Any problem loading down the 748? I don't see any particular warnings about it but no harm in asking. Most of the loads I see are in the range of 1900 fps to 2100. I'm also going to call Hodgdon tomorrow.
I've tried H4895, H4198, SR4759, IMR5227, and Trail Boss in the 30-30. Accuracy was ok, but just ok. Right now IMR4227 is best on the 1600 fps loads, and H4895 best on full power loads. HOWEVER I will probably not hunt with it anymore, since I have a .243, a MODERN cartridge fitted with revolutionary Barnes Bullets, state of the art primers, and high technology packaging. So most of my shooting will be lead bullets around 1600-1800.
I also haven't tried IMR-3031 but I already talked to Hodgdon about it, they say stick to full power loads with it. It seems to be about the same speed as H4985, so I'm thinking 748 will be something different.
Thanks for all the info.
