AR Lovers--The New Colt 901 In .308

Post by Sixgun »

OK guys, here's the scoop. This new Colt has been in development for some time and here's the first one, well, not the first one, but an extremely low serial number which I'm not allowed to say. Lets put it this way..its a single digit. :D

My bud Tommy always gets the neat stuff and I have to wait until the "peon load" comes in. In fact, I'm not even sure if I'm gonna snag one as in my opinion, what the heck can beat an M1-A?????? (we semi-old guys need to crawl out from under our rocks---I like wood. :D )

Anyway, the gun feels 'right", has a bit less weight than a LMT .308 and I'm told, is a one hole gun at 100 meters. The buttstock is adjustable, has a kick-butt flash hider, easy to use ergonomics and uses near indestructable Magpul mags.

I'm told they should be out to the public in the near future. Here's a few pics-----------Sixgun

The little piece of paper on the lower is supposed to hide the serial number--yea, like it could be seen anyway!

The magazine looks bigger in proportion to the gun than the magazine on a DPMS-308...?

Pretty sure it's the same mag, but do recall that the DPMS/Bushmaster/Remington guns are AR-10 clones and thus are proportioned differently. This gun is a new interpretation of the AR line by Colt and the claim to fame is that it will accept not only these new Colt 901 full size (large caliber AR) uppers, but also standard mil-spec AR-15 uppers (using some sort of adapter). That's pretty cool in theory but I'm not sure how necessary it is in reality? Just saying.

Nevertheless, it's a large frame AR from Colt. Colt!! That's alone is cause for celebration. :)

The interchangeable magwells are not a 'necessary' thing for most people, but there are certain organizations and things where this would definitely be an asset.

Colt bought out the COBB patent I believe, the interchangeable magwell/uppers idea came from them.

What can beat an M1A? Quite a few rifles.

LaRue OBR and PredatAR, KAC SR-25, and several others will far surpass any M14 design in accuracy, reliability and user friendliness.

I participated in torture testing with the OBR and 1200 rounds of filthy W German ball ammo was rapid fired with no cleaning other than two wipe-downs of the bolt and lots of lube.

Gun shot well below MOA before, and still shot below MOA after. Toss in 1,000 yard performance and the ability to accept any scope out there just about, including night vision mounted in front of it........no M14 can do that.

Even back in 'the day' the FAL was a superior combat weapon, though the M14 wasn't bad for what it was (the Italians invented the BM59 for the same reason, and kept it a lot longer.... some senior NCOs in the Italian military I dealt with still loved the piece, though they knew it's day was long over).

I see we have some knowledgable dudes here on the AR. MrMurphy knows his stuff. Some people (like me) tend to become closed/narrow minded as we age and what has worked for us for many years, will, in our minds, continue to work.........so...........why change? :D This was also true when the nation was changing from blackpowder to smokeless, lever to bolt, bolt to semi-auto.....

It took me until sevaral years ago to buy my first AR---always thought they were junk. My Colt LE 6940 has eaten up 2K rounds or so with no failures to function---other than a couple of my screwed up handloads---and will put 69 gr. Sierra's into little groups out to 500 meters----with a 16" barrel---If I can see a beer can, its toast.

MrMurphy really pointed out the advantages of this new platform and obviously has plenty of experience with testing, etc.

MrMurphy, you have just cost me 2K+!!! Now I GOTTA have one! :D ----------------------Sixgun

While true, there's something about the classic lines of the M1 Garand and M14. I carried the M14 early in the Army and switched to the M16. Smaller, lighter, more accurate, you could carry much more ammo, all in all a better combat platform. HOWEVER, let's face it, most of us ain't young enough to use one for real anymore so we're just hobbyists. I still like the classics better and that's why I have both the M1 Garand and M1A to complement my AR15s.

My father carried an M14 into combat and then an M16, then an M16A1, then a war later, an M16A2.

He appreciates the old Garand and M14, but every tool has it's purpose.

I appreciate them as well, but the design is with aside from a few new stock options, frozen in 1957 or so. Nothing necessarily bad, but the rifle will never be what some people try and make it be (a sniper weapon). Even the M21 had known issues.

The OBR, with the right shooter and ammo, consistently shoots under MOA at 1,000m using a 16" barreled carbine.

While growing up in the sixties, thats all what was talked about, the accuracy of the AR--or should I say, the lack of it. 3" groups with a weird mounted scope (on the handle) turned us all off. Then comes the late eighties, early nineties, and the accuracy dept. in production guns was supposedly fixed. Me and many of my cohorts no longer cared. Then about 1994 my nephew buys this AR Colt with a 24" stainless barrel and tells me that he is shooting pararie dogs at 500 meters---right out of the box. It still took me another 10 years to have enough faith to buy one.

I'm convinced now.------Sixgun

That's really cool. I'd love to have one of those.

In the mean time, I'll just have to suffer along with my Saiga .308 :)

The only thing I don't like about my Saiga is the mags - while adequate, I'd much rather have some Magpul-level mags for it.

Depending on the caliber (anything other than 7.62X39mm or 5.45mm, you're probably out of luck) it may be able to be converted for Warsaw Pact mags.

Doug,
Did you snag one or are planning to? Just wondering as I ain't seen any for sale yet.

Hey, look at it this way--If goofy gets in the black house this fall, there's going to be a major run on all black guns, so..........great investment. :D ----------------Sixgun

I am going to the fun store tomorrow (they're closed Mondays) and ask when they expect the drop date to be and try to put a deposit on the first one they can get. I had been following this rifle's development for a while - then lost interest when i heard nothing more for months, then lo and behold- there goes Sixgun with an actual rifle in hand! They were like stories about 350 pound Whitetail -- you know they are out there, but you rarely if ever see one
I know your buddy is privy to more insider and high dollar stuff than most people (judging by some of your pics over the years)-- but i'm hoping since there is one floating around out there now, maybe it wont be long before a few make it down to Oklahoma

Don't know if they will be selling at retail or not --- some recent higher dollar tactical type guns have seemed to flop a bit in the civilian marketplace (FNH SCAR, Bushy ACR ), but this being a Colt-- maybe it will do better

Lemme see... just what my priorities are... if I'm going to forego new tires on the truck... which do I want? A couple new 1873 clones in two different configurations for CAS or... a new Colt 901 in .308?
