I love '95's. They are the best shooters of the Winchester bunch with a very solid lockup. The only downfall is that (my personal opinion) is that they do not lend themselves to tang sights very well.

The 30-40's with their 28" barrels are a blast to shoot with the long 215 gr. Lyman 311284 at 1600. No problem hitting small things (or coming close to 'em :D ) out to 500 and beyond.-----Sixgun

Here's mine, an original Winchester 1895 chambered in 38-72 and with a tapered octagon barrel. Made in 1904 ...

I have this orginal carbine in .30 army. The rear sight was missing and I have a buffington on it. The hand guard wont fit over the sight. I belive this gun was made 1931 right at the end of production. It shoots well but I havent hunted with it or shot it much. I have owned it for about 35 or 40 years.

I have three Model 95's, a Browning copy in .30-40, a new-issue tang safety version in .405, and my favorite, an original octagon barreled .38-72.

I had a 1932 30-06 that I foolishly sold a while back. It wasn't much of a shooter, but I still wish I'd have kept it.

I wonder how hard it would be to make a "project" '95 into a 54R?

For years, the prize largest elk rack (mounted in a cape as an afterthought) hung in a friend's motel in Crested Butte, Colorado - taken with a Winchester 95 in 30-40 Krag - an old "slabsides yet. Was shot on Kebler Pass.

I have to settle for this one given to me by my wife for our 25th anniversary some seven years ago - in 30-06 -

Image

Image

OK - so I admit I did "help" her find it - husbands should help their wives all they can - besides, the more anniversaries that pass, the tougher it is to think up something new. It was "NIB, unfired, with manual" - probably part of an estate and value not recognized by owner -

Image

It shoots even better than it looks, too.

I hunted pronghorn last fall with my newer model Winchester 1895 TD in .30-'06.

It is a very smooth action. Long bolt throw makes tang sights problematic, but I prefer receiver sight anyway.

I've got two - one original production Winchester from just after the turn of the century - 30 US - was refinished and had the barrel shortened and had a frosted bore when I got it, but I firelapped it and it now shoots just fine though it will foul up pretty quick - absolutely loves .310" cast boolits - Lyman 210 grain gas check. Can shoot those all day with no deterioration of accuracy.

Also have a recent production Miroku in 405 Win. Here's a pic of that and a link to a video of me shooting it - 1/2 speed.

I just got out of the hospital. Don't want go back there for awhile? I've got a carbine I bought a long time ago. No hand guard rear sight butchered hammer broken. I did find a hammer from that dude with the upside down add in shotgun news it was $150. For some reason 2 30/40 cases the heads were glued into the butt and the lower forum. I thought about making a rifle out ofit. But I think I just want to put a peep sight on it and hunt with this one. I noticed that when I loaded 147gr FMJ that if u feed them fast there no problem of jamming but if u go slow it'll jam. Well I'd like to hear about loading for the guns.

I have a original 95 carbine in 30-40. For many years I didnt shoot it as the original rear sight was missing. About 8 years ago a old friend mounted another type sight that fit without drilling. I tried it out and was pleasantly surprised how accurate the gun is. I still havent shot it much more since then as I have other fine rifles, but may get back to the program with it.

Well, CRS used his 405 to take a cape buffalo today in RSA. I won't ruin his story for you but he is shooting .411-400 grain Woodleigh softs and solids at 2125 fps in a 24" barrel. First shot was in the heart and a very quick follow up knocked it to the ground. More details to come (including photos) directly from CRS....

Have been using my Browning 95 in '06 for years. With its Marbles tang sight, its a deadly game gun. Its more accurate than most folks would believe. My old partner still has a .35 Winchester that someone cut the barrel back to 22".

I dunno about a Browning 95 but my Winchester 95 30-06 (made by Miroku in 1995) did this with Wolf Gold 180gr copper SP ammo when I zeroed the sights - this was at 100 yards to hit 2" above POA - not bench rest - just fist rest on table at range - those are the pairs - solo shots were elbow rest. The 95 and Wolf ammo do thier job if I do mine -

Well I guess I should add my 2 cents, My G Grand Father had a 1895 carbine made in 1915, I have a photo of him holding it when he was about 30 years old and a photo of him holding the same gun when he was about 70, I have that rifle today, I wouldn't sell it for all the money on earth. He had other 95's in other calibers but he loved the 06. So I was brought up thinking the 06 was the ultimate caliber and the 95 was the ultimate rifle. I now own a browning also and I have put a copy of the mod. 21 lyman on it and I wouldn't let that one go for nothin ,I hope that my kids appreciate these rifles as much as I do.
I am going to find those photos and post them as soon as I can. It may not be the best rifle ever, but it's a dam good one!

I am a Marlin owner/shooter but there is no other levergun out there that has such a "classy" look to me as the 95 Winchester. From time to time someone will ask questions here about them and soon pictures are posted too and then I go to wondering how I could get hands one one. The truth is ,sadly enough, I have never seen one in person and therefore never been able to handle one. A few years ago someone posted a picture of a 95 leaned up against a tree in what appeared to be the Rockies. That is one of my favorite pictures that has ever been posted on this site. I think I may do a search and see if I can find it. You folks kindle a fire under me every time the 95 is talked about...I just wish I could hold one to see if they fit me well enough to start saving my pennies for another levergun.

The closest that I have come is lusting after my brother's Browning in 30-40 Krag. Or it was until he had it rebarreled to 405 Winchester. I know that T.R. liked it but I would have kept it in 30-40.
For myself, I want a carbine version in either 30-06, 303 Brit, or 30-40 Krag; in that order.

On second thought, the 303 British and 30-06 tie for first with 30-40 after that. I would be very happy to have a M95 in either of the three chamberings.

Yep - those who refer to aging as "the golden years" are really still young and those of us in those years realize that yellow stuff isn't really gold - IT'S RUST

I've found the Williams (or any) aperture sights helpful on my rifles - removing apertures makes it ghost ring -

Image

Image

Had my 86 year old eyes relieved of cataracts - second one last month - and that helped but, even a small amount of macular degeneration in my right eye - makes central vision fuzzy and my front sights on my 1911 pistols (even those very large King's Hardballer replacements) are fuzzy and hard to see - not enough to have me quit shooting them, however - apertures not being practical on pistols.

Image

Image

Hard to remember that, when I entered West Point in 1945, I read the 20-10 line with ease - yep - RUST.

I just noticed on the merzantique.com there r a lot of 95's for sale. I bought several 95's from him years ago. I went up there with a friend who lives in Minn. If you ever get a chance to go go. They have a place outside of Fergus Falls. There two houses one small house is where all the guns r and the larger house is there home. We went thru his garage and there was parked a original GT500. Once you get up were the guns are the lower priced guns r against the wall but there is a long hall way were the high dollar Winchester are located. Well I just wanted to pass this info on.
