Great pictures MrMurphy! What's with the vertical stab on that P-3? Never saw a Navy A/C without some sort of markings there. :?:

Oly, interesting and kinda sad all at the same time. Wasn't the Marana "collection" at one time open to the public somewhat like Pima Air Museum is at Davis Monthan? Would like to see some of the 'liners before they're gone altogether, of not already. Way back, used to see DC-10s and what not fly into there.

Speaking of cockpits…. I think most golf carts have more room for two than the cockpit of a B-25.

Watching one of the WWII documentaries they usually cluster around Memorial Day, there was an interesting bit on the 24 by a surviving bombadier. They were in dire straits with two engines out. His comment of (to paraphrase) "they hardly flew on three (you could sense he also meant four :) ), with two it dropped like a rock..." The way he said it was funny. My father flew these as an instructor pilot. I think they called it the "flying brick" or "boxcar" or some similar affectionate term. He had a certain fondness for it like all he flew (17s, 25s, 29s, A-20s) even some of the more problematic ones.

This is from the raid on the oil fields at Ploesti, Romania. I knew a guy who was a waist gunner in another B24 and saw this plane get hit and go down. 1 crewman survived. My friend survived 5 B 24 shoot-downs/crashes and escape from German capture, and died of heart disease in his late 60's some years ago.

Those old guys were TOUGH!

Added: I once worked with a guy who was an infantryman at the Bulge. I told him I had seen the movie a few days before and I was impressed with some guys crawling under moving German tanks attaching mines.
He said, " Yeah, the first few times you do that it's scary..."

May 18, 2012 - Fairchild 91 Baby Clipper
Small flying boat airliner. Fairchild designed the aircraft in response to a Pan American Airways request for a small flying boat to operate on their river routes along the Amazon and Yangtze. After the first two aircraft were delivered, Pan Am cancelled the remaining four aircraft on its order, discovering that the two aircraft they had already purchased were capable of handling their entire Amazon River demand. First flight 1935.

Anytime you see a plane go down with a wing off like that.......pretty much guarantees nobody gets out.

In the days before ejection seats, where the crew generally wasn't always wearing their chutes (though over the target, they did I believe) you lose a wing, the G forces from losing a wing would pin the crew to the walls of the fuselage. Short of being thrown out (by an explosion or say a waistgunner at an open gun position).......nobody gets out.

Nowdays if the guy can fight to get his hands on the Big Yellow Handle, he can still sometimes get out, but ejecting at high-G/weird angles may give him issues for the rest of his life.

The fighter version had 4 20mm Hispano cannon in the nose, 780 rounds per minute each, plus 6 .303 machine guns in the wings. Carried rockets for anti-ship use. They must have been fierce if you were on the ship, or the ground...

Correct, but there's always that chance.

The Beaufighter, Beaufort and Blenheim have always been interesting to me. Maybe it's the way the nose sits behind the props...

Here is that Super Corsair that I was talking about earlier, from Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ. I guess only a few of these were made to intercept Japanese Kamakazies. The powerplant was upped to the same engine as the B-36, bumping it up to 3000 horsepower. The guide said it had been clocked at Reno doing 450 mph at low altitude. Notice also the clipped wings and I think the Prop is a little bigger than the usual, already large standard one. The "Stang" is gorgeous as well...wish they had filmed it flying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3D9GT1PoJ4

Was at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum 40th Airshow today.

Good weather, no rain, some thin clouds at times. Was on the flightline from 11 to 5:30. Took over 400 shots. I still have to go through the stack. Did try some video of the heavies flying pass.(Lanc, B-17, B-29, and medium B-25 Mitchell)
Here are two.

FIFI from Texas. The only remaining flying in the world. They never did a fly past in the direction that would show the plane in a better light.

F-86 Golden Hawk. This is a slow pass with pilot waving through the open canopee.

Here is a still from the video. It needed a little work to bring out the more of the details. The light was getting flatter and flatter and the clouds in the background are just not helping. An hour earlier would of made a huge difference.

March 28th, I was at the Imperial War Museum (Duxford) which is a little south of Cambridge in England. Spent the day and took lots of pictures. The F-86 was out on the tarmac and later in the afternoon it flew and did a practise demonstration. As it was a week day and not a show date, it was GREAT. A private air show, what more does one need. Here is a couple shots. Enjoy, I did!
I also hit Hendon where the RAF Museum is located a couple days previous. Another full day there as well. Heaven!
