OT - Southwest travel

Post by bsaride »

OK, I have decided to take up 86er on his hunt in August.

I will be driving from SoCal to Hondo (near San Antonio).
I will have 2 1/2 days to get there and 1 1/2 days for a
straight shot back home. This would allow me to hunt for
2 days and not be racing back and forth on the drive.

Any recommendations on places to stop, visit, stay overnight
on this trip? I am not opposed to camping either.

Crossing the desert in August? - travel at night and take plenty of extra water. Having driven this same trail many times, I always stop in Tuscon for some sleep.

You ain't gonna have enough time to do much sight-seeing. But, there are several great places to eat along your route. Depends on what you like.

Let me know, I'll offer some suggestions.

The good news, I-20&10 is posted 80mph in TX, bless their hearts, so that part wheels right on by.

Last time thru San Antonio I made 2 mistakes: a, I hit the beltway at rush hour, and 2, I took the beltway.

But it looks like you can jet down 689 and miss the big city altogether..,

I just got a replacement car that has good a/c but still not planning
much daytime driving if I can help it. First shot to Tuscon sounds right.
Places to stay and eat in Tuscon and any others to look out for would
be great. I like everything and hole-in-the walls with good home cooking
are prefered.

I drive the West Texas leg of that fairly often. I wouldn't worry about the heat in a good car with AC. It's worth seeing the country to do it in the daylight and there's MUCH less chance of an "encounter" with deer on the road.

Why travel if you're not going to see where you're going?

Make sure if your driving threw west Texas, and only doing 80 mph, that you say in the slow lane to keep from getting run over. :D

10-4 on driving in the slow lane unless passing - it is state law - not enforced in the cities, but it can be on the highways. Also, if you see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder, either slow way down or move to the left lane(another state law) or the next ticket the HP gives may be to you.

BTW, I just received the following info from a friend (fiend) in AZ, so I can't attest to its accuracy or veracity:

Driving Through Texas? Beware !!!!

New Texas Highways Zero Tolerance Speed Camera

With the Texas highway death toll continuing to increase, this will be the first year that Zero Tolerance Speed Cameras will be used. The new cameras look a bit different from normal speed surveillance cameras. I have included a photo so that you will know what to look for as you're traveling around our great state. Make sure you do not speed when approaching one. Please take this warning seriously as these new devices offer no warnings or second chances. Happy motoring!

You've been warned!
