Just came back from the movie with family - a daughter and wife - as part of my Father's Day.
The Rotten Tomatoes website didn't exactly pan the movie, and they and another site described it pretty fairly. A few scenes kept me on the edge of my seat. But then, I like science fiction with alien invasions and shoot-em-ups and a scary part or two and good special effects. This had all of that.
The movie was unusual in that it starts out rather humorously and looks to be a "boy finds girl" movie for its character development; but after about 15 minutes or so the invasion story begins.
The employment of our current (and past) military firepower was pretty cool, and of course the alien firepower was different and entertaining. There were some suspenseful moments to keep it stitched together. It was kind of like "we are all united to get those bad aliens," like the Will Smith movie, "Independence Day." As such, it leaves you with a good feeling IF we beat those alien boogers. On the other hand, IF it ends up that we lose, then at least you are left with the idea that we all died as brothers (and sisters) trying.
Er...that last bit was written so's I don't spoil the ending.
There was nothing wrong with the special effects - they were well done. From where I sat, the movie was not as good as "Avatar," but still quite a lot of fun, in my opinion. It was PG-13, so it was a family movie for us - tasteful and yet entertaining. I have to protect my 34 year old daughter from the bad stuff, ya know. (Edited - Avatar, not Avitar)
