Antipode Map--other side of world

Post by getitdone1 »

Here's something fun to play with. Antipode Map where you can place 'marker' exactly where you live and left click on 'swap locations' and the marker on the 2nd map will be exactly on the opposite side of the world. (With left mouse button move the map to position the 'marker.')

My earlier post asking how many people in this LeverGun group were from other countries got the biggest response from guys in Australia. So happens that Australia and South Africa are on the opposite side of the world from the United States.

This will answer the question: "What location in the world is the farthest from where I live?" Also tell you about the plane trip that'd cost you the most.

Related and outstanding:

Google Earth and Goole Map. Combine these with Wikipedia and you can really learn a lot about coutries of the world.

Well, it puts me in the Indian Ocean. I guess I don't have a doppleganger living on the opposite side of the world.

Hmmm... I couldn't find anyplace in U.S. other than Hawaii that didn't have the antipodal point in the drink. Am I doing this right?

Cool! - when I get to my 'puter I'll check it out. When checking latitudes (for some reason) awhile back, I discovered where I live now is exactly - within.a very few minutes - of where we lived when my dad was stationed in southern Japan in the early 60s, AND the same - again within minutes - as Baghdad, Iraq (that one the dubious achievement award of decade, but still interesting) - on the other (other) side of the world. Our Bagdad (no h) Arizona is within the same degree but more minutes.

Middle of the Indian Ocean.

-42.13374928756021, 75.6544303894043

Draw an equilateral Triangle between Cape Horn, the cape of India and the south Eastern most point of Australia.

Find a point 1/2 the distance between Cape Horn and Australia and that's my antipode...

It's a little wet...

All wet by the antipodal map: (-39.808536041445905, 90.3076171875)
Wherever that is.

{( Backed the map out and found it's off the SW corner of Australia. Suits me fine as I've always wanted to go to AU. Kind of a long swim though. )}

When you end-up in the middle of an ocean--in this case the Indian Ocean--you have to zoom out to see Africa and Australia. Otherwise you are looking at the ocean without any land or even the name of the ocean.

Center of USA antipode is roughly at the lower end of Western Australia, in the ocean and closer to Australia then to the tip of South Africa.

So the farthest body of land I can find from the U.S.A. is Australia. Tried zooming on the ocean where the marker is--roughly 1800 miles West of Western Australia--and could find no land. South Africa lies roughly 3200 miles to the West. So the antipode for U.S.A. is in the Indian Ocean with water for many miles--all-around.

I haven't studied the oceans a lot but it seems strange to me--in all that distance of ocean--that there's not even the tiniest of islands. I'll have to look some more.

The world is a huge and fascinating place.

One of the most out-of-the-way places I've found thats inhabitated by humans is Pitt Island which is about 500 miles East of New Zealand. Abbout 38 people live there and a ship delivers supplies every 3 months. Farming, fishing and tourism is their main sources of income. 8 students in the school. Electricity via generators and wind turbines and they have satellite TV and internet connections. See Wikipedia and Google Maps.

It's a fair bet that if I started diggin' to undermine their perimeter, they'd never see me coming.

Ever.

Huh?? That location is in the water off Bermuda.

In fact, the entire CONUS is opposite water on the other side of the globe unless I'm missing something. Hawaii is opposite Africa and Alaska just barely clips Antarctica.

Wellington New Zealand antipodes to Spain, lower South america antipode to Mongolia/Siberia and the islands in the coral sea antipode to Africa, but there really aren't a lot of other places that antipode to land on the other side.
