So what optic would work best on a Rossi '92

Post by flightsimmer »

I've recently installed Steves rear peep sight in the bolt safety hole along with a large white front post sight and so far I like it just fine but what if I decide to get a long eye relief, low power fixed or varible scope or Dot sight. What might work best? Keeping in mind the small lightweight ruggedness and handiness of the carbine.

Drill and tap the barrel for a scout scope like 86er did on his 1886.
Kind regards,

I'd recommend the Burris Fastfire-II unless you really need magnification. You can mount it on the Quick-detach B-Square mount with no gunsmithing, still use your iron sights 'for backup', and it works great. Or, you can mount it in the barrel rear-sight dovetail (adapter needed). Or, if you have a drilled and tapped barrel on yours (many of the 16" ones do) that fits the Rossi 'scout' mount, of course you can just use that. I actually use a pistol laser in combination with mine, which makes shooting in dim or no light possible for night 'patrol' around the chicken coop and goat barns.

The B-Square mount and Burris Fastfire are small together.

It does sit off to the left with this mount, as opposed to the 'scout' type, but the dot is still extremely fast to find and line up. So far, I've found it faster and no less accurate than a regular scope in the 'scout' position, unless I cheat and use a benchrest.

The Rossi comes pre-drilled and Steves Gunz has a Picatinny sight base to fit it.

I'm looking for low power optics like 1.5x3 or similar.

I use that same rail with a 2~7 x 28 pistol scope. The longish eye relief is perfect for a good sight picture and just the right magnification. The FOV is very restricted however, as compared to typical rifle scopes, but I have gotten used to it.

I'd skip the telescope part of the scout set up and go straight to a red or green-dot type of sight. The Burris and Nc-Star units are small and fairly in-obtrusive.

Of course you'll have to consider what range(s) you'll be expecting to shoot at.

I had a scout scope set up on my Marlin 1894C and it was great when there was good light, but at twilight or in other low light situations, not so much.

Since most of my shooting with that carbine is at or under 100 yds I decided to take the red/green dot route. It's a "point and click" type of sight. Put the dot on the target and pull the trigger.

I mounted one of the NcStar sights on the scout rail I took the scope scope of off.

Here's the 1894C i mentioned:

... and here's a Model 94 that did about the same thing with:

Good luck. Hope you find something perfect.

I put a cheap 2X BSA edge on my 92, only weighs 8 oz. I bought it for load development and liked it so well I've kept it on. Bought it on sale at Midway for $30. An inexpensive red dot would also be light and work well.

Actually, I've known about the premise for over a decade. ( I used to be an "early adopter", buying/trying something ASAP it was introduced - aka: beta tester)

I mounted the Grandpappy of the Burris Fastfire et al, a Tasco Optima 2000, atop the bolt of a .375 Win BB94 over 12 years ago, using one of the small Weaver-type bases meant for a BAR.

Doug Turnbull recently figured out & fashioned a side-mount adaptor plate, that uses the factory peep prep holes.

IIRC, after the Tasco Optima was discontinued, the same sight was distributed as the J-Point, and then the Docter Optic.
