Which Powder for Plain Base Cast?

Post by Bob A »

In an attempt to cut the cost of my plinking habit, I am going to work up a load for 150 gr Plane Base cast for my 30-30. I would like to get 1500-1600 FPS if possible without leading.
The bullets are on order. I am told to expect BHN to be about 20.
My research, so far, tells me that XMP5744, H4198 and Reloader 7 maybe candidates.

What do you guys think?

XMP5744 HAS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF SUPERB FOR ME IN SUCH APPLICATIONS.
WITH LEAD BULLETS IN THE 30-30, 38-55, 45-70 ETC ETC I COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR MORE WITH ACCURACY EASILY FOUND AND VELOCITIES IN ALL CASES WERE RIGHT AROUND 1600FPS IN THE 30-30 AND 38-55.
I BUY THE STUFF IN 10lb LOTS AND WATCH IT DISAPPEAR INTO SMOKE.

Couldn't say it better than Terry did. 5744. I prefer the RE-7 for hotter ammo.

Terry and Griff, thanks for the info.

Now I need to find a supply of XMP5744. I know we have quite a few California Levergunners on this forum. Anyone know where I can find Accurate Powders? My local guy only carries Hodgdon, IMR, Winchester and Alliant.

The choices you have there are what I use for my 45-70 cast loads. If using the 30-30 again, I'd be trying them.
I have used H4895 under a gas checked 170 in the 30-30 with good results too.

I use 8-8.5 grains of Unique under a 165 grain plain based for a plinking load. The XMP5744 sounds like a good one too, but I always have lots of Unique around.

Like the other boys--5744. I just bought two 8 pound jugs and hopefully I won't have to buy any more for a year. I use it in about 10 calibers.-------------------For the 30-30, I use 21 grains with a 175 gas check saeco bullet for 1750------------Sixgun

I have had great luck with both 5744 and 4198. I have been shooting more 4198 lately though. I had to get my 5744 from a dealer almost 200 miles away last time :x while everyone around here has 4198 on the shelf.

Hey Bob A, If you live near Susanville, Wallyworld has it. If you go to Reno, The Rite Aid (I think) Drug store at the corner of Kietzke and Plumb has it.

Until you can get ahold of some 5744 try 15 grs of 2400.

Thanks Gun Smith, Susanville is a little off my beat but Reno might work. I used to live in Nevada, glad to know that the drug stores still sell powder and ammo.

WOW in America you can buy gun powder at the corner drug store? What a country! Here in Peoples Demokratic Republik of Hawaii this is unheard of.

I'm working on SR 4759 in the 30-30 for that purpose. Nice groups!
