Winchester mod 1894 rubber buttplate

Post by Hombre »

I have a Winchester mod. 1894 Extra Lightweight Take Down Sporting Rifle and I really need the correct vintage hard rubber butt plate with the toe for it. Any suggestions where I can find the correct one?
Maybe I have to be content with a repro but I will try to find an original first.
Any suggestions at all should be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Don't waste your time looking for an original as that buttplate option was about as rare as a trapdoor option on a '94.--------Sixgun

I wouldn't try to repair the original. Use the Repo and keep the original for when you decide to sell. You retain the value of the original and don't risk further damage it or the rifle by using it.

For what it's worth, over the years I have replaced a number of broken original rubber butt plates on early Winchesters with the available reproductions. With careful fitting and doing a little "antique" work on them, they can be made to look very very close to the originals. Like most things, the end result is directly related to how much effort is put into them.

Keep in mind that the repros are oversized and take a small amount of effort to fit them correctly.

Griff, that sounds like a very good advice and I will do as you say!
For a repro buttplate, any company which is better than the other one....?
By the way, later I will show pictures of the whole rifle. It is a beauty with double set triggers, td, original Lyman tang sight and a repro buttplate.

Hombre,
Not meaning to quarrel with my good friend Griff, but that is an EASY fix. I have made several Winchester hard rubber buttplates that were completely missing the last inch look undetectable. Here's what you do--

I do not know if you can get this product in the "Land Of The Swedish Bikini Team" :D but we have a two part epoxy thats called PC-7. Its similar to modeling clay and it dries to a grayish color. I'm sure you guys have something similar.

You get yourself a Dremel tool or some type of a handtool so you can scratch up the areas that are to be glued. This helps with adhesion. Mix up the epoxy and get it in the cracked area and actually make up pieces that are gone. Make it slightly larger so when it dries you sand/file down to the original size.

After a full day or two of drying, get your Dremel tool (or handtool/sandpaper) and work it down to the original baseline. Take your time---its tedious but easy. :D

You will be left with a perfect buttplate but with gray areas. So.........get some flat black or satin black paint and blend it all in, preferably with a small artist's brush.

Aftr it dries, wipe your whole gun and buttplate down with your favorite oil.

I have made MUCH larger repairs on Winchesters of 45 caliber years ago and they are still holding up after many rounds.

With a rare rifle like that, your better off keeping it "right" ------Sixgun

As far as repairing the buttpad, try G-Flex from the WEST epoxy people. They put out a monthly newsletter that is full of examples of how people have used their epoxy to fix odd things. The beautifull thing about G-Flex is that it is designed to tolerate much higher amounts of flexing then normal epoxy. I would say take it off the rifle, put it on something that contours to the inside of the pad (after you cover that something with wax paper), fill the gap and let it harden.

If you go to their website, they have examples of interesting uses and suggestions for color matches.

Unfortunately they did not have the rubber butplate that I need but at least they did answer.
I take that as a big+ Too many do not bother to even answer and I can not help that this irritate me a little.

Stefan,
I don't know how old you are but back in the eighties, the "Swedish Bikini Team" was a big hit over here in the states. They were a bunch on blonde babes advertising beer--I think?? :D (I was drinking a lot in those days)---------Sixgun

You can at least make that buttplate presentable by repairing it with acraglass tinted to match the original.
