Levergunners rejoicing across Canada at midnight tonight

Post by KirkD »

At midnight tonight, after the Canada Governor General's royal ascent, the Canadian registry for rifles and shotguns is gone. Whoo Hooo! What that means is that our rifles and shotguns no longer have to be registered. We can sell or ship or trade them directly to each other without having to register them, or the trade or transaction. We don't even need to go through an FFL dealer. Fourteen million rifles and shotguns, approximately seven million which were registered and another seven 'below the radar' for the past decade or so, are all our own personal business and no longer the business of the government. The registry was a colossal, 2 billion dollar failure in preventing even a single crime. To make this on topic, this applies to leverguns such as my modest collection of old 100 year+ Winchester rifles. It also applies to Marlins, Savages, Henry's, Ballards and Whitly's and any other other levergun you can think of.

It even applies to the 30-30 !!!!! :D

Actually in Canada, with a PAL you are a FFL dealer. We could ship guns back and forth between PAL holders at any time but we had to change the registration with the Feds when we did so. Now we do not need to tell the Feds anything! Best day in a long time!

Our government actually rolled back an existing gun control law!! Our foreign friends can appreciate how much hassle and grief this was. It would be the same as having to call the FBI and seek their permission to buy or sell a Winchester, with everything subject to confiscation. They have promised to permanently destroy all existing records as well. This will keep changes in government from easily reinstating this afront to freedom. We still have restricted and prohibited classes for handguns and some assualt styles but for an old fashion pine knot killer it is a dream come true.

We expect an avalanche of squirreled away unregistered guns to hit the market! Maybe my Win 95 303 Brit dream might actually happen!!!! There are truckloads of lever actions (maybe even a few of those clumsy side grabbers), shotguns, and 22s sitting in closets up here, not to mention trainloads of Lee Enfields and Ross'. As we say here in Calgary, yahoo!

Dirk, is the law dead at midnight tonight as far as transactions go? I certainly wouldn't own an unregistered gun but it would be nice to know ;-).

The news I read on CBC news is that it is 'dead' at midnight tonight. That sounds like registration is dead as of midnight tonight. I think a lot of fellows will be taking a look around just in case they might have forgotten to get them all signed up back when it was instituted. Just sayin'. 8) Export/import records for Canada reveal that there were about 7 million unregistered rifles and shotguns. I guess it was hard for a fellow to remember where all his guns were and to get them all signed up when the registry was in effect.

Blaine it is a done deal and dead issue. The reports are flooding in. The province of Quebec has a court injunction to save the data for their province only until next week. The Minister responsible has directed the registry to destroy all other data immediately. There is a local gun show tommorow in Calgary. It should be a real celebration.

We have all expected this but the reality is overwhelming! We have all lived with a heavy fist over our heads for too long.

My plan to celebrate is burning my registrations in a lead smelt planned for the weekend and a solo shooting spree in the Crown forest. I'm extra proud of my country today.

wouldn't you know it, California just passed registration for long guns last year (it hasn't taken effect yet, and only affects new purchases if I remember correctly), so say hello to another $2 billion blunder.

We're happy to take on any gun control laws you want to get rid of.

Multiple "WOW"

Going forward, that's great news, Kirk - BUT - Were the old registrations destroyed ?

If not, It's a sad fact - ANY previously registered persons/guns, are STILL registered, and avaliable to the Gestapo.

The former party in charge (Liberal) pushed this through with the lies that it would only cost 85 million and the fees would self found afterwards. What a joke after 2 billion! Just think of how many LEOs we could of had on the streets catching the scum for that money.

Now the current party (Conservatives) which are more western Canada based have been pushing to dump this since it was brought in. They even used it as one of their election promises for years. Now they have a majority and did finally do it!

It seems that in the last 24 hours, a lot of fellows have been finding rifles and shotguns that got 'lost' about 10 years ago. 8) A lot of ammo is turning up as well.

I can speak of importing to Canada but not the other way. We usually dream of guns and products we read about but can't source. I think your government has been very restrictive at the border going both ways.

If you ever find something let me know I can ask a couple of dealers up here who have contacts and sources in the US.

There are a lot of us prepared for this so I suspect a flurry in our home market. Many of them will just change status from fugitive guns to legal arms again and get passed on in families. Most Canadians were meat hunters and not gun collectors so working guns will abound! In most cases if a Canadian wanted something unique or collectable it was imported.

My shopping list includes a Savage 99 and Marlin 39.

In regards to the past years our Alberta Province has always supported sporting firearm use. They told the Federal government that if they wanted it enforced to pay for it and never pushed enforcement. Our necks are about as red as you'll find in Canada. Kinda like Texas, lots of oil, guns, ranchers, and loggers.
