Range Report --Marlin 1895 45-70

rbertalotto inspired me to go out and try my hand at 100 yards with my 1895 CB -45-70.
2 1/2 IN. group of four , 405 grain RN over 45 grains of 3031.
Shot from prone off a rest.

I see that you spare no expense on your hobbies! That was a good shot or three at that sausage stain in the center! You fired this from the prone? How long did it take you to get back up? If it was me, ya gotta allow at least ten minutes for me to crawl to a fence post to pull myself up to my feet! Good shootin' pard!!

At one point I had a pair of the 1895CB's . I had bought a second to reline and make a 40-65 out of but I never did and traded it off still NIB .

The other one however pretty much lived on home cast bullets the whole time I owned it other then the first 20 shots that were jacketed factory loads I shot up to get some brass .

This 1895CB was the first rifle I tried my hand at casting for and it did very nicely in the beginning with the Lee 457-340 PB as well as the Lee 457-405 PB . I used to cast them and tumble lube them unsized and load them like that . Also had a Lyman tang sight on that rifle that worked nicely for me , Later when I started sizing lubing etc in a 4500 I went to the Lyman Gould 330 grain PB HP bullet with 31.5 grains of SR4759 and killed one of the 3 largest bodied whitetails I've ever killed in my 40+ years of hunting . Shot him at all of 21 yards from the base of my tree and it was most certainly BOOM flop !

I often had thoughts of a four gun set of the 1895CB's in 45-70 , 40-65 , 38-56 and 33 WCF . But I've also never been one to tear apart a brand new gun and do such things .

The ONLY problem I ever encountered with the 1895CB was the lack of a recoil pad when I started loading H322 and the like in the gun with cast bullets to get more velocity . That hard plastic/rubber buttplate would work on you from the bench with a good many of my loads . A slip on recoil pad would have helped a good bit . But I didn't have one at the time .

But all in all I've found the Marlin 1895CB pre Remington days to be a very nice shooter and hunter for the money . Expecially if you have a little bit of the retro thing going on inside you !
The gun worked great with a tang sight for me although for some reason I always wanted to try one of those Malcolm style long straight tube scopes on the rifle .

Thanks for the comments fellers, Wade i don`t shoot prone very often and the recoil from that hard butt plate 6pt. referred too bit pretty good on top of my shoulder.
Yep, luck there was the wife and a fence post near by to get up.

Say fellers what do ya all think of my modified lever that i lengthened, i`m thinking about putting the factory one back on as the bluing is nicer on it.

It seems to me that you would be able to fit your hand in more easily and lever the rounds quicker with the longer handle. In cold weather with gloves, this might be especially useful. You might have something!

My honest opinion is that I don't like straight stocks as much so I would likely want a Cowboy with a pistol grip and pistol grip lever. But, those who like straight stocks may like the longer one.
