Does anyone worry about long chamber short cases in 30-30?

Post by Canuck Bob »

My 32 Special, asked about 30-30 becase most experience would be there in these almost twins, has a case that is much shorter than the chamber. This is common from my research and the SAMMI reference drawing shows it that way.

Does anyone worry about this or load long cases? The 32-40 cases could be used to have a case that fits the chamber length closely. I read reports of lead donuts and paper rings and wonder if that is from this aspect of the cartridge.

I didn't even know that this was an issue.

So, I guess I haven't worried about it :P

I have a history of solving problems that don't exist! Just curious as my case is about .050 shorter than the chamber. I've got some better slugs on the way for better accuracy.

Hmm.... I currently have (and shoot) four .30-30s and one .32 Special and have never even heard of (and to my knowledge never experienced) any problems with short brass in any of the chambers of my rifles.

Maybe a long winter in Canada?

Over the years I have just trimmed to the recommended
"trim to" Length in my Speer manual and always full length re size so they will fit any of my several (15) .30-30 rifles.

If best cast bullet accuracy is wanted I will fire form a box of 50 cases to fit a particular rifle and use a chamber gauge when setting up the re size die so the shoulder is not pushed back to give excess head space. This is true on any shouldered case.

Canuck Bob,
Based on my experience, that should not be an issue. Some of my 30-30's have a .06" space between the end of the case neck and the end of the chamber. As a test, I made some chamber length cases from .32-40 brass and did not see any difference in accuracy as compared to the standard .30-30 cases.

Never had a "lead ring" experience.

Been shooting 30-30s since the mid 1960s and I've never heard of this.
I did have one with a short throat. It wouldn't chamber proper length ammo loaded with Hornady RN bullets.

This is what I found when I did a throat slug for setting up cast equipment. The standard Winchester chamber has no ball seat (freebore) or tapered leade. The rifling just starts with a 15 degree angle at the chamber end. Ranch Dog's drawing of a 336 chamber shows the same case chamber relationship but the Marlin has a throat with a 3 degree taper. Drawing links below.

It struck me that there might be an advantage to a closer chamber fit but your experience does help there. I am planning to throat my 32 Winchester like the Marlin drawing.

I realize my old 32 is a deer rifle but like Junior on his site I want to squeeze all the accuracy I can from a peep sighted 94 shooting lead. I'm a lever rifleman to the core so it is a fun project. Most would sensibly advise the effort isn't worth it but it should be a ton of fun and an education on 94s.
