The Lesson
I hope this doesn't sound like bragging, but...I was out shooting at the local range. Had a few favorites with me (336CB 30-30 and 1886 45-70). Two younger guys were there banging away with their bolt guns (big, loud magnums). During a break I walked out and put up 3 full pepsi cans in the snow on a little rise just shy of the 200 yard line. One kid asked what I was gonna shoot it with and I told him my 30-30. He got a kick out of that! We visited for a bit and the upshot was a bet. Him and his friend vs. me, one shot each. Loser had to clean up the range...they did a pretty good job of clean up.
Those guys were surpised what can be accomplished with a good gun and set of peep sights. We shot from a kneeling position. Stepped it off later at 176 long steps. I may not ever be able to do it again on the first shot, but I did when it counted.

Love it, love it, love it!
Kind regards,
Tycer

I always thought it would be fun (if I were that good a shot) to enter one of the DCM matches where everyone shows up with their AR-15's, M-1A's, and the occasional 1903, with some sort of levergun which would be legitimately 'military' (not up on my history enough to know which choice(s) would fly), and win. Everyone seems to act like the only guns you can shoot accurately with are the bolt guns and recently, gas guns. I KNOW the stuff about 'single piece stocks' and 'action stiffness' is fine and probably means 1/4" vs 3/8" groups from the bench, but in terms of practical shooting I can't believe a lever gun is always going to be inferior to a bolt or semiauto.
Anyone ever hear of a lever gun at a DCM match?

Most excellent!!!
as far as DCM matches - I was on the Officer in Charge of the East coast Navy rifle and pistol team for two years in mid 80's. It was my job to shoot up my allotment of 30,000 rounds of ammo each year in my Match M1A and .45 - each! Each morning the team would meet at 630 on the range in Damneck and we often brought other rifles and pistols to practice with. I took my 1895 in 45-70 often and at 600 yards, got pretty good with it. I never saw one in a match though. We got serious for those.

Beware the man with one gun, he likely knows how to use it!
In my experience the majority of guys shooting big magnums are NOT good shots. They expect the magnum round to help overcome their shooting short comings. Also whether they want to admit it or not, most I have seen also have a bad flinch! It is a great thing to see them out shot with a real "man's" weapon.

Well Done, Sir! Love it when that happens!
As for DCM matches, I shot my qualifying match for my M-1 Garand with my mdl 94 Winchester. Scored respectfully. Don't recall the score, but it weren't LAST!

Grat shooting Wes. When our local range was still open I enjoyed the chance to do that on ocassion with a handgun. Only had a 100 yard range so it was easy to do, my grandson still likes to tell friends about shooters packing up their rifles and living the range.Oh for the good old days.
