Now living in Hemet, CA

Post by getitdone1 »

Just moved to Hemet, CA and wondering if some of you live here or close. Too, hopeful that some of you might give me some tips about where to look for a house and the better (not wealthy) areas. Some say the east side is best and some say the west side. I'm leaning towards the east side. Sure like the citrus tree orchards and the closeness of the mountains. Look forward to giving the whole area a real good look-over.

My biggest concern is the summer heat out here so I may not buy a house until I see If I can take that. I hear it gets 10 degrees hotter in Palm Springs so thinking if the rich and famous over there can take that then maybe I can take Hemet.

Moved from Bellflower and originally intended to buy in that area and also have better weather. However, once I got on the internet and seen the great--and I mean great--difference in home prices between there and Hemet--I had to move to Hemet. I was not about to pay 3-4X for a house in Bellflower/Long Beach area compared to what the same size of house would cost me in Hemet. Seen lots of "cookie-cutter boxes" in the Bellflower/Lakewood area going for 250-300,000 dollars. Not for me!

Gonna have some fun looking this place over.

Darned, I thought you were gonna be a neighbor. Oh well, you are right about house prices. And if you though Bellflower was high, don't even come to the beach where I'm at. Thank heaven's I bought over thirty years ago, cuz I likely couldn't afford it today.

Don't know much about Hemmet, but I hope you like it there and find a suitable place.

I had drafted a reply, essentially saying the same, but cancelled it as I thought it was harsh. In synopsis, it said, "there are no 'nice' areas in Hemet."

Remember this thought, "it's a dry heat!"

Griff’s comment about Hemet -- "there are no 'nice' areas in Hemet" -- triggered my mind.

During my 25 year plus Federal civil service career in California, and from people living in the greater Los Angeles area said, I came away with the impression that Hemet may not be one of the bright spots:

Hemet Crime Rate Report (California)

“Hemet crime statistics report an overall upward trend in crime based on data from 11 years with violent crime increasing and property crime increasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Hemet for 2012 is expected to be higher than in 2009.

“The city violent crime rate for Hemet in 2009 was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 20.26% and the city property crime rate in Hemet was higher than the national property crime rate average by 29.81%.

“In 2009 the city violent crime rate in Hemet was higher than the violent crime rate in California by 9.42% and the city property crime rate in Hemet was higher than the property crime rate in California by 44.28.”

Read all ‘bout it:
http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statist ... hemet.html

Hemet, CA Profile

“Through the 90's Hemet's population has grown by about 63%. It is estimated that in the first 5 years of the past decade the population of Hemet has grown by about 16%. Since 2005 Hemet's population has grown by about 7%.

“Hemet's property crime levels tend to be higher than California's average level. The same data shows violent crime levels in Hemet tend to be about the same as California's average level.”

See charts at the below link for more info on crime rates.

Something else: if you do become interested in a house, ask to see copies of the last year's water and electric, heating, and cooling bills. That will give an idea as how well the house is insulated and what utilites will cost. For some people the cost of utilities is a real sticker shock. Same goes for property taxes.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Thanks for the warnings. I've heard negative things about Hemet. I believe the truth is, no matter what city you live in, your location will take care of most of the crime/personal safety problem. Drugs and crime in every city but we all know it's mostly in certain parts of the city.

Have a friend who has lived here since 1997 and never had a problem. About a half hour ago I talked to an old fellow at Walmart and he never mentioned any problems and thought I'd like it here. He's retired from Caterpillar and raised on a farm in Illinois. Interestingly, he was working with computers way back in 1952. He mentioned his daughter use to live here but at a higher elevation than him where it was cooler.

60s and 70s in the winter--I can take that !

98 average for July and Aug.--we'll see.

jeepnik,

I can tell you for sure if you live in Rancho Palo Verdes or Palo Verdes Estates I'd like to be your neighbor. I know there's other very nice places close to the ocean but these two are my favorite. With aid of computer I've seen the estimated value of most houses in that area and they are out of my price range by quite a lot. Have no need to impress and see an expensive house as a waste. If I had lots of money then I would indeed buy one of the best. Had to get things sorted-out in my mind and decided my house has to be on some acreage and not 10 feet from houses on both sides. Such is affordable in Hemet area.

Thanks for wanting to be a neighbor. Maybe we can one day meet at a range and get acquainted.

I think that 90's average is the average between the days low and high. 60 in the morning and 120 in the afternoon!!!

What about a bit North of you, in Cherry Valley, or Redlands? Redlands is a nice town, Dad used to live there.

NO! NO! NO! We NEED more rational gun owners here in California. Welcome Don!! I hope thousands more like you move to California. That's the only way we are ever going to be able to out-vote the established liberals.

The only other option is for the north of California and the south of Oregon to once more pursue forming the State of Jefferson so that conservatives have control over their chosen rural area, rather than always being out-voted by big city liberals.

I apologise, Hobie, if I have steered this thread too far into politics, but then politics is what got California into the mess it is in today.

Again Don, WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA!! :D

I was born and raised in So. CA. And it wasn't too bad 'cause I love the ocean and desert (surfer, diver, sailor, desert biker). Plus I stayed drunk most of the time 'till I was 39. I left almost 3 years ago after retiring from an excellent job with The City of L.A. (the reason I stayed there the last 26 years). I had researched and visited the Hemet, Victorville area when looking for a place to retire and the area wasn't too bad; quiet (no freeway noise, jet noise, or Sheriff's helicopters), clean air, and I could drive out into the desert for solitude. But, I found a few things to my disliking. Weather; way too many 100+ degree days during the summer with the accompanying utility bills. Crime; L.A. latino gangs had a good toe-hold in the area, and were growing. High unemployment (would not afffect me directly but a lot of the homes/areas reflected this). And the worst thing about Hemet is it's still California. Crazy, absolute idiotic gun laws. Voting in CA is a waste of time; elections are settled in liberal courts. CA is broke, and they keep finding ways to fine the working citizens. Illegal immigration is welcomed (did you know you didn't have to speak/understand English to work for L.A. city? Citizenship not required either!). So, two days after I retired, I escaped to Southern Oregon...

I'm with Hobie, why not escape to a free state? You could enjoy the wonder of walking into a gun store and buying anything you want and walking out with it. (assuming you have the money and can pass the telephonic background). Even an evil firearm such as an AR or AK can be your's. And 30 rd clips also. Ah, the sweet smell of freedom! God Bless and good luck.

m.wun,

Thanks for your 'on the mark' suggestions. Will be looking over the homes around and in the citrus orchards--around Winchester, Nuevo and Diamond Lake. Ideally I have a house with valley and mountain view, some acreage with a place to shoot pictured in my mind. Makes finding my place much harder and more expensive. Had no idea the Bonanza TV show was filmed in nearby mountains and definitely want to see that area.

I do agree with you guys regarding some lousy laws in this state.
