How Good are KELTEC Rifles?

Post by tomtex »

You can find the site at,http://www.keltecweapons.com, some of their stuff looks like came from a James Bond move?
I think they need to add a 7.62x39 line of rifles, but how good are the 5.56m rifles, and what are some good accessories for them?

Do a bit of a forum-search, and you'll find several here have them and seem to really like them. I don't have any (yet), so I can't add much to the discussion.

Hopefully the ones who have them will chime in soon...

they're ok and in some case better than that--almost a cult-like following...have a coup[le of friends that have thier small 9mm (FP-9), they shoot good, accurate, and the pricing is hard to beat. I always thought if I needed a .223 cal rifle that I would get either the SU-16A or the RFB... :)

I'm really interested in one. I like that they take standard AR mags. I'm not sure I could bring myself to buy one over an AR-15 because of the cost and availability of parts and accessories. I'm talking about for a stuff hit the fan scenario. For general plinking and overall bumming around gun, I would do with either. I REALLY like the stock on the Kel Tec that folds out into a bipod. Love that feature on the Steyr scout rifles too. I think it's one of the handiest, neatest features I've seen on a rifle.

It seems very practical - what else to do with the 'bulk' of a forend...? I've not owned or even handled one made that way, but it seems very sensible.

I am on that list also. Let a friend talk me out of one of the old Grendels and this looks better.

Madman likely has more first hand info about Kel Tec than most on the forum,

I personally cant comment directly on the rifles, just on my experience with one of their little pocket pistols ---- the one Ruger ripped off (or vice versa, idk) --- its a solid piece and just the thing i would want for an ankle or pocket gun ---- i love my little Sig 238, but the good looking sights that make it so fun to shoot are candidates for pocket snagging ----- the KT does not have those issues -- it is all business :)
A friend's little KT carry gun has been stone reliable without a stoppage for 1200 rounds (pretty good for a inexpensive 380 )

If the KT rifles are as good as that, then it should be a winner for the intended use

I can vouch for their pocket pistols (P32, P3AT, P11 etc), having been a user since 1998 - but have zero experience with their rifle.

They're a decent company, that stands behind whatever they build, however - I don't think anyone would go wrong giving the rifle a try.

I think the RFB is one of the coolest guns ever offered, but I can't come up with the $1000 difference between that and a PTR-91...

Good thing I got the paranoia years ago and made a constant habit of picking up a box of magnum everytime I was anywhere near where they were sold.

Interesting news today-------------
Called Kel-Tec (talked to Shawn)in the Technical Rifle(Su16)section of their facility.

I wanted the latest scoop on their guns and expected longevity.) (especially their SU16 line)

He said one of their latest tests was done by firing 3,000 rounds (all in 100rd drum magazines)rapid fire(within 1 hour). :o

Lucky the tester was a big strong brute cause after about an hours time(puts some strain on the muscles)

Recorded barrel temp reached was (800 degrees)

The gun functioned/functions/shoots fine still and they use it for demonstration purposes and the gun has exceeded well over 10,000 rds (so far)at this point----just shooting A OK.

Needless to say boys,if it will handle that--under that stuff(how long will it last with normal use/care)?????????

They are the real deal.

If ya think I am pulling one over on ya------------call him! Shawn (1-321-631-0068)(Rifle section)SU16's at Kel-Tec
