Google preferences ?

Post by Pitchy »

Hey guys i`m having trouble with my Google search engine, there used to be a preference tab you could click on to set your preferences but it`s gone. There used to be a gear in the right corner to click on to get there but it`s gone.
Anyone have a idea of whats going on.

There was a Privacy box there, when I clicked dismiss, the little "gear" was there.

The latest Google will not let you set preferences. I had my computer worked on and when I got it back they updated everything and I had the newer Google. I hate it. You can't tell it to not auto suggest and as soon as you start typing the box you're typing in jumps up to the upper left part of the screen. I finally adder Firefox and go to Google that way. It gets rid of the auto suggest and leave the box you're typing in in the center of the screen. It also gets rid of a lot of annoying popups.

As on March 1st, Google will change their "history" logging practice, and unless you opt out they will use your Google history as they see fit for marketing and 'other'.

Yeah ... "Privacy box", that's funny. Apparently clicking it allows Google to double down on what it sends back to the mother ship. I'm sure by now everyone has seen the issue where Google decided to ignore the user's privacy settings in the Apple Safari and Microsoft IE browsers. Once companies reach a certain size, there's a clear coating of impunity that washes over them.

Don't mean to step all over your post, but I've got a Google question myself. I use the Comcast home page, and loaded the Google toolbar. But every time I shut down the PC, I lose the Google toolbar if I come back later by clicking on the Internet Explorer shortcut icon. I have Comcast set as my default home page. If I do a new "install" for Comcast home page the Googletoolbar mysteriously returns.

Anybody know how to avoid having to reinstall either the CC home page or the toolbar?

Washita,

Set Google.com as your home page. That way you won't even see the comcast screen. In Firefox, select the tools in the upper left, then select the general tab to enter your home page. I'm not in fornt of a machine running IE right now, but PM me if you're using IE and I'll give you instructions to set a homepage with IE.

Gents,

I think that it does not matter anymore. It is not just Google that tracks your Internet usage. It is all about $$$$$. As an example, GunBroker.com auctions has started to feature more advertisements on its site. I do not care for some of the ads, but I try to ignore them. A member of the GunBroker forums wanted to why they were now rotating advertisements for a porno site. I have never seen a porn site ad, but I figured that he had a valid concern. Well, yesterday, I browsed the Tiger Direct site looking for computer memory & a digital converter box for my TV. I have not been to that site in years. Later in the day, I started browsing the GunBroker auctions, and lo-and-behold, ads for Tiger Direct start showing up on GunBroker's auction pages! :!:  This gives me some idea of why another GunBroker member was seeing porno ads. I believe that those ads are somehow generated by "Ad Choices", and I have seen that name, along with "Google Ads", on too many Web sites, via "cookies". Your privacy & security settings don't mean much, when other people & companies ignore them, or find ways to get around them. Unless something very drastic is done, Web tracking is here to stay, and "privacy" is just another word.

Hagler, what you say may be correct, but I also see TigerDirect ads on Gunbroker and I don't use or frequent TigerDirect website.

Chas.,

Thanks for letting me know that. I still, however, have a strong hunch that we all are subjected to tailor-made advertising, through our daily use of the Internet, and e-mail. Perhaps, the ads on GunBroker are part of a pool of ads, and when we meet certain criteria, then specific ads are thrown our way. Until then, the advertising company just guesses at what we might buy.

If I look at an online catalog, chances are the side bar ads on web pages will show that product, or ones like it. If you are worried about it, turn off your computer for all time, and never use a credit card again :P Personally, I value the convenience of using online services...especially online banking, and other account managment and bill paying. This will be important someday if I can't physically drive, or more likely the bastids make it so expensive to own a car, I'll opt out.  That's what you should be worrying about: Being shoved into a centrally located beehive with everything within walking distance, or on a bus/train route.

Try www.duckduckgo.com. They advertise they don't go into all the snooping that the other search engines do. Been using it about a year - like it.

If I click on a search the first thing that come up is Google. It's programmed into the computer some how. How do I remove it so that it does not come up or get used at all?

Pitchy,

I'm now getting spamed as a result of that issue. Never did get spamed before! Further, there are tons of temp files showing up in my unit that never were there either. Computer is now bogging down like crazy. Guess my system is now showing signs of illness...good ole Google and their spy stuff infiltrated my system via an email....just dandy. :x
