I've seen some of these rifles with a "standard" barrel, and also with an extended barrel that is longer than the magazine tube.
What's the deal with the longer ones, were they just trying to do something that looked different to catch peoples attention?

Re: Winchester 94 Ranger question
I thought all the Rangers were in standard 20" and 16" carbine configuration with barrel band -- predominately all 30/30's with some .357's being made in the 16" version
The Ranger was the economy model '94 and they didnt offer many variations, (but i've been wrong before)

Re: Winchester 94 Ranger question
Modern (post WWI) Winchester 94s came with several "standard" barrel lengths: 16", 20", 22", 24, & 26". Depending on the actual model or derivative model, "standard" is something of a misnomer.
The Ranger model 94s were more about a "base" in terms of finish. They were generally not buffed to a high luster before bluing, and wood was finished with more of a matte finish than other model 94s. Magazine tube lengths also varied, but generally ended about ¼" short of the barrel, unless a particular chambering came with something like a 22" and the magazine wouldn't have added another full cartridge to its capacity by meeting the barrel. Both the "Pack Rifle" and "Timber Carbine" came with shorter mags in order to hold the weight of the gun down... mainly the loaded weight.
What caliber/vintage was it?

Re: Winchester 94 Ranger question
It was a newer production gun, low-grade finish, no safety, and in 30-30.
It looked like this one.

I remember seeing those before, back in the late 80's...wondered about the barrel length too, almost looked like a parts gun that didn't seem to match... :)mike@nds wrote:It was a newer production gun, low-grade finish, no safety, and in 30-30.

Re: Winchester 94 Ranger question
The parts gun theory might be right, I just found a pic of a very similar Ted Williams version.
Maybe these were made up with the leftovers after Sears dropped the line.

I bought my Winchester 94ae Ranger 30-30 new in the mid 80s at K Mart for $150.mike@nds wrote:The parts gun theory might be right, I just found a pic of a very similar Ted Williams version.

The magazine tube is 1 5/8 inches shorter than the 20" barrel. It holds 6 in the tube.
My signature has a picture of the rifle.
It shoots wonderfully!
