Vacation snapshots from Indonesia

Post by gundownunder »

In case anybody didn't notice my absence,
I've only just started posting again after being away for 3 weeks in Indonesia with my son.
I managed to bring back about 250 snapshots and video clips, so thought you might like me to share a few.

24 miles outside Bandung city on the island of Java is Tangkuban Perahu volcano. The stink of sulfur is everywhere and almost nauseating in some places. Eggs cooked in the boiling waters of the crater taste pretty good after a long trek into the center of an active volcano
Image

If you want to gauge the size of the crater, consider that there are people walking across the ridge on the far side and you can't see them in this picture
Image

When a volcano erupts and pours its pyroclastic flow through a village it doesn't leave much behind, and when it does it at 2.00 am it takes a lot of people with it
Image

Borobudur Temple, built around 800 AD is 25 miles from Yogyakarta on the island of Java. It is the worlds biggest Buddhist temple and it's in the middle of the worlds biggest Muslim population.
Image

Rob and I stopped to get our pic taken by a local 3 levels below the top. The Stupas (domes) in the pic are made from blocks carved out of volcanic stone, there are 72 Stupas and each one contains a stone carved Buddha statue.
Image

To walk to the top of Borobudur the way the original pilgrims did it would add up to a bit over 4 miles, meditating on 2670 carved stone panels as you went. It takes a few hours to do it without the meditation and if you ever get the chance to do it, TAKE A HAT, I didn't and the result was painful.

Bob,

Neat pictures. I am fascinated by that temple. Is there an inside to it?

Congrats for choosing such an interesting part of the world to visit. I actually like the lava-lava look. Saw a Samoan kid at the grocery store wearing one and it looked real comfy. Tell us about the food!

Joe, there is no inside. The temple is made up of about 80,000 cubic meters of solid stone, with no mortar of any kind, just interlocking grooves in the stones.
It is made with 7 levels and the monks and pilgrims would walk 4 times around the first level and then twice around the second, third, and fourth levels, followed by once each for the next 3. On the first level there are two rows of stone reliefs on each side and then one each side for the next two. The top 3 have the Stupas with the Buddha statues in them.
Image

These reliefs tell the life of the Buddha in pictures.
I guess you could think of it as a 1200 year old, stone, comic book, that tells the story from Buddhas birth to his enlightenment and accent to the next level.
Image

The temple is not something you worship in to a deity outside.
Rather it is a place you meditate on, to achieve understanding of the story contained within the temple
It is a place where you aim to achieve enlightenment and inner peace.
Image

You can sit at the top, and enjoy the sunrise, with nothing on your mind but the beauty of the world around you, and you can understand why they built this place.

Me neither Pitchy. But I'm thinking that those skirt-like garments would help prevent a nasty fungal infection in all the wrong places. Us plus sized westerners generate a lot of heat and sweat. Going "commando" would probably be the order of the day too.

Proper attire in the temples is to cover your legs/knees.So either pants or "skirts" are required.Great photos! Reminds me a bit of some of the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia.

I began to read the sign from the first pic aloud and my wife's eyes popped open... She's Indonesian herself. T'which was amusing :) Thanks for sharing.
