Looking for a version of the venerable Stevens Favorite

Post by mklwhite »

Back in the days of the old site there was a post about Stevens Favorite rifles. There was a link in that post that took you to a company (that I think started with a "W" - a last name? - sounded German maybe?) where they were making their version of the Favorite. They only made a takedown version. And you could get it in 22 mag. I don't have the link anymore since the computer upgrade and can't find the site based on the sketchy info I remember. Does it ring a bell with anyone else? I was thinking about getting a Stevens Favorite, but was not much impressed with the one the store had. Finish seemed not the greatest. So I thought I would look and see what my options were/are.

I'll bet you're talking about Varner Sporting Arms, http://www.varnerguns.com/

They ceased production years ago and were bought out by Dayton-Traister, who maintains (sort of) the above site. There is contact info, so, what the hey, try it and let us know.

I have a fairly plain Varner myself, and it is a very nice rifle. Now that I could afford a fancy newly made one, I'd like to find them in production. They do occasionally turn up on the auction sites.

I have a Stevens Favorite in .22 Mag. I bought it about two or three years ago.

I have a pre-99 shot out Stevens Favorite that I will try my hand
at making my first custom rifle with.

Any of you have a problem with me doing so to an early one?
This one is with the 7 o'clock extractor.

Thought I'd ask before I ruin an original.

That's it! Sorry to hear about them being bought out and all. I may have to email them to see if they still offer the 22Mag. version. Kinda worries my that they don't list the prices anymore.

I believe Savage still makes a version also. At least a year or so ago I went out looking for a .17HMR at loal shops, and I found a savage that looked just like the old Favorite in that caliber. Wouldn't be surprised if they made them in .22 LR too.
PS-Did a quick check, and Savage makles a 30G that is a copy of the old Favorite! Check here:

Thanks for the link. I'll take a peek. Sent off an email to Varner. Have to see what's up with them too.
