My mistery Marlin 336 SC w/pictures Any ideas??

Post by Mossyoak1957 »

Maybe someone on here can figure this one out.
I picked this Marlin 336 SC 35 Rem.up a few years ago and was always a little bit of a mystery to me.

It's got some miles on it,a lot of bluing is gone...no rust ...no pits....no buggered up screw heads and shoots dead on at 50 yards.

Some strange things about it.....
It has Super Grade Deluxe sling swivels on it.
Non-Micro Groove Barrel.
The serial number on the upper tang does not match the lower serial number but does match the serial number on the stock.
Didn't Marlin serial numbers always start with a letter on the 336's?
It does have it's bulls eye still in and the round sight hood.

Get one that is a him - they shoot better. The its shoot better to. Come to think of it, get an it - not at all temperamental. Mine is an it and it shoots great.

Don't let OS intimidate ya... if she's a fine shooter... then she's a fine shooter... handled with care and compassion, "she's" aren't mysterious! And can be quite responsive... far more so than some "him", and infinitely better than some neutered "it"!

If I'd be required to hazard a guess, I'd say that it's a parts gun.

May have been a corrections or other LEO gun at some point and had a deparmental number stamped on the tang...? Definately a non-production stamp though.

The waffle-top reseivers were away in the early-mid 50's, when Marlin started to D/T the top of the receiver for scope bases; and the SC wasn't chambered in .35 Rem until 1950, so the Marlin SN should have a letter prefix of "G", "H", "I", or "J" (1950/51/52/53) on the lower tang.

The mis-marked lower tang does not have a factory SN, leading me to believe it was defaced (stolen ?), then renumbered by some official who had no knowledge of the hidden serial numbers on the tang and buttstock inletting.

My favorite kind of gun is one that has seen some use and shoots well. That way I don't have to worry so much about not scratching it :D I'd shoot the heck out of that gun. "She's" purty.

Marlin did not use "I", "O", or "Q" for serial number prefixes. I believe the 35 Remington was not added until 1953. It looks like the lower tang definitely could have been buffed out and numbers added.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

What are the first two digits of the s/n's that appear on the gun?

Serial number on tang and in butt stock inletting bear no resemblance to Marlin serial numbering system in use then...

Nice a "wavy top" 1948-52 if I my memory is good. Nice rifles, usually carried lots and shot little. Bet it killed 30 or so deer with only 2 boxes of ammo thru it.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The OP's gun is from 1950, 51, or 52 - since the .35 rem came in 1950, & the waffletop was out by 1953.

David - Here's a 1950 magazine ad, where Marlin introduced the .35 Rem in the SC.
