You can pretty much do it all with a good o'l shotgun & little round balls

Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
Nice deer! Did you shoot him with buckshot? I'm thinking that shotgun is a Parker?
Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
The shotgun is a Parker and it's a Trogan grade to be exact !

No I didn't. A guy on the Parker forum posted the picture.Dave wrote:Nice deer! Did you shoot him with buckshot? I'm thinking that shotgun is a Parker?
6pt is right about the gun.
Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
that's a fine whitetail.
Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
I have never shot a deer with buckshot and always wondered about it. That is a very nice looking gun for sure.casastahle wrote:No I didn't. A guy on the Parker forum posted the picture.Dave wrote:Nice deer! Did you shoot him with buckshot? I'm thinking that shotgun is a Parker?

Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
I grew up in a shotgun only area. Me and my dad and uncle hunted 'mostly' with slugs, but definitely buckshot as well - as a lot of guys ran dogs, and sometimes the deer are really moving when they came by.Dave wrote:I have never shot a deer with buckshot and always wondered about it. buckshot can definitely work, but I'm very much happier to now be hunting with a 30-30. Most other guys in that area definitely primarily hunted with buckshot and they would take shots at deer that shouldn't have been taken. We've shot deer before that when skinned, you could see a dozen or so bruises where they got hit with buckshot that didn't penetrate - or would have a few pellets sitting just under the skin. So, buckshot can work, but you have to know its limits.
Although, not to contradict myself, but 6pts recent post thinking again about getting the old 10gauge out and hunting a day or so with it next year - Big 10 can really knock them down with the 18 pellet load of 00 buck - but then again, even with big 10, you don't want to be very far away - 50 yards is usually safe with the 10 gauge - 100 yards is way too far.

The doe I popped in the 2010 season with my grandfathers old 10 gauge was exactly 26 yards when I shot her .
Since my old gun is for 2 7/8" shells I'm only able to get 12 of the 00 Buck pellets in each load !
On a side note of sorts it's looking as if the old 10 gauge will be heading to Arkansas next week for a go at piggies !
Gonna cart along a nice old Parker GH damascus 16 gauge I have as well . This one will be loaded with nine #1 Buck pellets .
My old 10 gauge shoots a very nice pattern in both barrels at 25 yards , 50 yards while still capable is quite a bit larger . I believe one day I shot a pattern of both barrels of the 10 gauge at 25 yards and all 24 pellets were inside a 16 inch circle .
The 16 gauge I've only tried at 25 yards but it shot nice patterns as well with all 18 pellets inside 15 inches I believe for both barrels .
I still wanna try both these guns with single roundballs in each barrel or perhaps a round ball in the first barrel and buck in the second or vice versa . Either way since I've layed the smack down on a deer using buck in the old 10 gauge I now would like to use a roundball or Foster type slug to kill a deer with the old gun !
According to my game ledger I've killed 232 deer so far in my lifetime . Of those 232 , two were Mule deer and nine were Sika deer . So of the 221 whitetails I've killed in my life to date only the one I killed with my grandfathers 10 gauge in the 2010 season was killed with buckshot . To be honest I've never hunted with hounds and very rarely did I ever hunt with enough people for man drives . So the majority of my hunting has been with rifles , ML , bow or a rifled shotgun with sabot slugs .
The doe I popped with the 10 gauge was not done under what I would call normal buckshot hunting conditions . I was up in a tree stand which is normal enough . But I had a rifle and the 10 gauge up the tree , I was prepared for deer at a distance and if they came close enough to my self imposed range limitations then I could try with the buckshot . I think it's safe to say the majority of the folks that hunt with buck do it because they have to or for safety reasons . My own intrest in the buckshot is so I can say I used such and such gun to kill this that or the other .
Nothing wrong with why or how I do or did it . But I think my way and reason needed a little explanation .

Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
I just came in from the loading room . Made sure I had plenty loaded for the 260 REM , 7mm REM MAG , 44 MAG and the 444 Marlin . I'm taking 25 rounds for the 260 all the same bullet weight , 35 for the 7 MAG all the same bullet weight , I have no less then 100 loaded for the 44 MAG 3 cast bullet weights and two different cast bullets for the 444 !casastahle wrote:Hey 6pt, definitely post a report here & on the

Just loaded 10 more rounds of 00 Buck for the 10 gauge so I have 25 of them and I still had 22 rounds of #1 Buck for the 16 gauge so I am set .
Well that is unless I decide there's something else that just has to go

I was told we'd be using shooting houses and corn for the piglets ! So in all likleyhood I'll carry a rifle and shotgun each trip to the stand !
Once I pot one with the 10 gauge I'll bring the 16 into play

Number one on my own personal agenda is to plow one with my grandfathers old 10 gauge !

Great buck and beautiful S/S....I'm a rifle man but back before I had so many birthdays under my belt ...we hunted the swamps of Marylands eastern shore for Sika...slogging the marsh to jump them up like bunnies with pump or auto scatterguns with slugs and buckshot...it was a bunch of fun
...ah, the good ol' days

Re: (pic) Buck With Buck...
Been there and done what you say some but never got one with buckshot !CalvinMD wrote:Great buck and beautiful S/S....I'm a rifle man but back before I had so many birthdays under my belt ...we hunted the swamps of Marylands eastern shore for Sika...slogging the marsh to jump them up like bunnies with pump or auto scatterguns with slugs and buckshot...it was a bunch of fun...ah, the good ol' days
All the Sika I killed in Maryland were shot from a treestand with a rifle , bow , ML or shotgun with rifles slugs !
